Gus Bialick: the boy who loved Britain
Throughout his life, Gus remained fiercely committed to the values for which Britain fought.Gus Bialick鈥檚 parents emigrated from Poland in 1905 joining a vibrant Jewish immigrant community in the East End of London. Gus鈥 father fought in World War One for Britain. When the Second World War started, Gus was conscripted to fight, and first saw action in 1943. He was fiercely passionate about the cause for which he and others were fighting, describing himself as being 鈥渆cstatic鈥 after Germany had been defeated in 1945. In spite of his old age, he enjoys speaking to groups of young people about his parents鈥 experiences as immigrants, his own wartime experiences and love of Great Britain.
