Amputee's struggle to get modern prosthetics
A quadruple amputee who lost both his arms and legs after a streptococcal infection has told the Victoria Derbyshire programme he is being denied the prosthetics he needs to live an independent life.
Alex Lewis, 34, says micro-processor knee joints would allow him to walk with stability - but they are only given to some injured veterans, as well as NHS patients in Scotland who meet certain criteria.
NHS England does not comment on individual cases, but says the independent Clinical Priorities Advisory Group had previously "concluded there was insufficient evidence to support routine commissioning of micro processor knee joints", though there was "the intention to consider it again over the coming months".
Alex wants the NHS to consider the prosthetics on a case-by-case basis, to take into account unique circumstances such as his.
