More than a million women experience domestic violence in England and Wales every year, with an average of two women killed by their current or ex-partner each week.
So a refuge really can be life saving - but 32 have closed in the past four years and many more are under threat.
Actress Danniella Westbrook has this exclusive report on an issue close to her heart - the words of the women involved have been voiced to protect their identities.
