Before the secret ballot at elections
Abuse and intimidation in politics did not start with Twitter.
Before a West Yorkshire by-election in 1872 people could not vote in secret, and this meant they were often pressured to back particular candidates.
One of the original ballot boxes used in that by-election is on display in Pontefract.
