'Such pressure to be masculine'
The NHS, prison service, police and teachers all need urgent reform and training in how to deal with transgender people, according to the first parliamentary report into the issue by the Equalities Committee of MPs. It wants the government to come up with a strategy to tackle the problem within six months. The report found that transgender people still report high levels of transphobia daily, with the NHS "failing in its legal duty" to provide equal access to services and guarantee zero tolerance of transphobic behaviour. It urges compulsory training for the police in dealing with hate crimes. Transgender people should have, say the MPs, the choice of an X on their passport instead of male or female. Jim Reed has been looking at issues affecting the trans community.
