Mel is swapping vol-au-vents for vocals as she brings her unique brand of zesty fun and frolics to Let It Shine, alongside co-host Graham Norton. It’s goodbye to the big tent and hello shiny studio stage! With Mel onboard, the dream duo is complete.

Mel’s a talented presenter, actress and comedienne, but can now add Queen of the contestants’ Common Room to the list! Mel will be keeping our aspiring boybanders company backstage, and hopefully banishing those pesky pre-audition nerves with a joke or two. Will the lads keep the place spick and span with Mel around? Not quite. She’s already summed up the smell in one word: “Musky.” Nice.
Having been through the audition process herself, Mel knows just what the boys are going through. “I really feel for the lads because I’ve been there many, many times. I had to go to an audition for a rather large West End musical set on a Greek island. I didn’t realise that you had to go with sheet music to give to the pianist. I took a Mark Bolan CD, a small ghetto blaster and then sang along. It was absolutely appalling.”
She may not have won over the West End that time, but self-confessed Take That superfan Mel (“I love them all, there is not one member of Take That that I do not love”) has had chart success of her own, with her first - and currently only - Number 1 single, a cover of Avicii’s Wake Me Up, which she performed as part of Gareth Malone’s All Star Choir for Children in Need in 2014.
Mel’s no stranger to big TV shows, having presented The Great British Bake Off along with her comedy partner, Sue Perkins since 2010. In 2015 Mel became part of the Eurovision presenting team and in January will again host this year’s UK national selection show, Eurovision: You Decide. She’s also a staple of the British theatre scene, having appeared in Jack and the Beanstalk at London's Barbican Theatre, The Rocky Horror Show Live at the Playhouse Theatre, and Luce at the Southwark Playhouse. With Mel’s extensive background on TV and onstage, keeping the boys in order backstage should be a piece of cake!
