Magda is utterly devoted and supportive of her brother Augustus, running the orphanage with iron discipline.
Believing children should be seen and not heard, Magda relies on the eldest Maurice to keep her informed on the orphans鈥� behaviour, a role she rewards. When her adored brother finally tips over into insanity, Magda flees Crickley Hall and retreats into a catatonic state until Lili's arrival brings back horrific memories.
