Having allowed Halecot Farm to go to seed, Isaac’s complacency is shaken when his estranged sister returns to outbid him at auction. Feeling justified in his morose recalcitrance, he and wife move to nearby Ashburton.
The ongoing feud between stubborn Isaac and Elspeth engulfs the whole family, not least son Lewis who is now eligible for conscription unless able to find secure farm work.
By 1918, Isaac's family feud has cooled and he has found a new job guarding German prisoners of war who are proving to be a vital source of labour to local businesses.
