Meet Dr Hazel Talbot

Dr Hazel Talbot is a consultant with the Infant and Paediatric Service for Yorkshire (Embrace). She joined the service when it was first set up nearly four years ago.

When a call comes in from a hospital, she decides if the patient needs to be moved to a specialist centre. And if the child or baby is very sick - she will do the transfer herself.

She says: 鈥淵ou very quickly get used to the skill of assessing someone over the telephone using another pair of eyes.

"You get quite used to trying to work out what kind of equipment you might need, who your team members are going to be, what鈥檚 the safest way to do it."

That way might be by air ambulance.

"A consultant is needed whenever the consultant decides the patient is sick enough so if we can predict that a patient鈥檚 really sick, then we鈥檒l go out," she says.

Meet the patients聽

One of her patients is 14-year-old teenager Chance who has a rare condition which has badly damaged his heart.

We follow him as he is flown 200 miles for a life-saving heart transplant from Leeds to London's Great Ormond Street Hospital.

There is just a five hour window to get Chance to the hospital.

Dr Talbot from the Embrace team has to step in to get him there in good time. It鈥檚 a job which she finds incredibly rewarding.
