Many years later, she feels the presence of her pursuers once more and decides to end her restlessness once and for all. But she needs help, and the only person she can turn to is her daughter Ruth.
Charlotte Rampling, who plays Sally, says of the character: 鈥淗er secret hasn鈥檛 affected her relationship with Ruth at all for the past thirty years because she hasn鈥檛 told anybody. Her past is also the reason for Sally鈥檚 strange behaviour; she is forever on the look out with the thought that one day they will find her. This suspicion and the constant unknown is the basis of the story and where we find Sally at the beginning of the film, in the seventies, 30 years after the war.鈥�
