Fibroids

Many women find out they have fibroids while undergoing a routine scan when they are pregnant. Prior to this, they had no idea their womb contained these dense balls of muscle as they caused no problems. For others though, these benign growths might contribute to infertility, problem periods and, if they are large enough, incontinence.

Lower Fertility
It鈥檚 not clear what causes them, although there is a well-established link between the presence of fibroids and lower fertility or childlessness. Could the trend towards having babies later in life be responsible? Or is it a question of diet? Why are black women more susceptible?

Hysterectomy
Typically women with problem fibroids will have a hysterectomy. (One third of all hysterectomies are performed because of fibroids). But there are other, less drastic options. And many are concerned that too many hysterectomies are being performed unnecessarily.

Surgery
There鈥檚 an exciting range of new less invasive, more targeted surgical procedures available: some remove the fibroids, while others cut off the blood supply. But success rates vary according to the skill of the surgeon. And often the longterm impact of such operations is uncertain, because the techniques are so new.

On Check Up this week, Barbara Myers will be putting your calls about fibroids to Dr Elizabeth Owen, asking why some people get them, can they be prevented and evaluating the pros and cons of the very latest techniques to work out what鈥檚 best for you.
