A crowded East beach
This of course can be equally matched by an equally crowded West beach
.... and can't we put a "proper" fence round this memorial
When are we going to get the erosion problem sorted once and for all?
Perhaps we should get a daughter of Marion of the Heads to rule out here, then things might happen!!

will we ever find a way to stop erosion?? i always thought it was a natural process and there was not much we could do to stop it!! on the crowded beach issue in NZ in january--summer holidays over there, put three or four people on the above pictures and you have crowed summer beach at bethells same kind of scenery except the sand is almost black, because of the lava flow centuries ago!!

There's nothing wrong with that fence. There isn't a sheep inside it and I'm sure it's enough to qualify for an EEC grant.

Why not simply move the monument? You could swap it (an even swap if ever there was one) for the Place de la Concorde Obelisk while you are at it. Why not? Where there is a will ... # By the way, CrofterBill, you should not cavalierly brush people off your beach photos. Rather unthinking of you, I should think. I mean, you could be blotting out the evidence of criminal activity....! Repent, CrofterBill!! # Seriously, nice beaches. From what Sunny had assured us in an earlier blog, swimming is feasible for the natives and only the English incomers turn to ice pronto.

Thank you for your thought Calum, your input has been noted and the EEC grant form will wing its way. On a similar vein - perhaps thats why things just dont happen - eh? Chiefly because we dont have a Marion of the Heads - someone with get up and went !!

mjc - the why not is - the tottering monument has 350 poor Irish and English souls under it from a serious shipwreck in 1853. Erosion - we could do more than is being done, such as more adequate break fencing, gabion baskets filled with rocks but I bet it wont happen in my lifetime.

Thanks for pointing the wherefore of the monument, Crofterbill. Should there not be a way to raise money privately (from private donors, foundations etc)? If you were to make it your mission, I am sure you'll find a way to get it done, Crofterbill.

FC - good point but with an average age of 55 plus(?) we would be short on physical ability. Plus getting bums OFF seats is not the easiest of tasks. We could give up our rights to have Gaelic/English road signs and put that money to a better use perhaps.

Ancient bipeds recommend those specially high chairs with wings as an encouragement to rising of bums from seats. Allegedly, you can get special ones that do the rising for you...must be yeast or something...it's a mystery to a cat.

So, get on with it, Crofterbill. Horse and rope, with the aid of some crowbars, would righten the Annie Jane Memorial up and you could stick some Quikrete under it. Or you could Quikrete a base for it, and shift the memorial a foot or so. Send us some pics of work done, not to forget pics of the old geezers celebrating. Maybe if you agreed to put new signs for the momunment in both English and Gaelic you could get an euchemenical effort, and the work done in a jiffy.

If they had spent less money on the new car park , fence and walkway to the catalina , they would have had enough for a decent fence around the memorial . I've never seen so many cars and campervans stopping to have a look at the plane . I was on the east beach paddling a few days ago in the sunshine , gave the west beach a look but not as good as many years ago due to the erosion . We have to wonder if the causeway is speeding up the erosion.

It may well have been , is that a blue cardigan I can see? Wish I was there now instead of working here . I used to live on Barra , went to school there before the causeway was built and going to vatersay was like going on holiday . One day I will be back for good and I have been considering vatersay as Barra is very busy now loads of tourists .

It may have been , you never know . Anything interesting happening out there just now , co-op started yet ? I may come back over at christmas but the beach may well be replaced by the fire ,a bowl of soup and a nice cup of tea . Roll on the summer

I did hear a rumour that if the causeway was dug up and 2 underwater turbines were implanted then we could have free electricity !! Sounds like a good swap to me. Nice to see someone else submitting blogs as well, good luck I say.

I've been looking at the former croft house that is for sale on Vatersay.(only on line) That is what led me to reading all the above codswallop. Sounds like my kind of place. Could I join you, Crofterbill, for a tea or perhaps a beer and a dram. I'm sure we could put all of the wrongs to right.- Even if only in our own heads.!!
