A Snippet from The Past.

Now that we are in the Spring of the year and as one thinks back many memories surface from the past. Having been brought up to the crofting way of life springtime has always had its special connection with the other seasons, as regards the crofter's calendar of progress.

It was never an exception to experience some winter conditions at this time of renewal. The cattle were still housed and being fed from the abundance of the barn. The barn itself was regurally stowed straight from the stackyard. This was a task which I took some pleasure in on a a good day, hauling hay and corn into the barn where it would be handy to fed the animals confined to the byre. You would hardly imagine the warming effect this labour had on all worked at it,even on a cold day.

The methods peculiar to crofting years ago required simple physical effort that gave a certain toughness to young and old. Could it be that we miss the active efforts of the agrarian toilers of the past.

Definitely! its all these newfangled machines and big green men in tractors,

I don't miss physical effort, IW ... :-) Each morning I have to heave the bag of coal, which must be around 25kgs, into a position where I can pour it out, and then fetch a basket of logs to split for kindling, and because they're always too big to go on the fire ... Today I carted 25kg jerrycan olive oil from the store to the workshop, and hefted it onto a shelf, and then 4 x 12.5kg boxes of solid oils the same way too ... then manipulating 15kgs of hot mixture into a mould, and when solid, manipulating the block out for cutting ... Good for the pectorals, that ... :-)

soaplady from not just crofting, you know ... :-)

From Co-Op to Microwave; it's an easy life now............

When I look at my daughter watching soap after soap I wonder how she is going to fare in 30 years time. I suppose it is all to easy for those of us who have not had to do hard physical labour year in and year out to romanticise it,.but, none the less, I believe you are 100% right.

Barney from Swwithiod croaking doom again

For Soap Lady I recommend the purchase of a rulleboer (wheelbarrow) to save her pectorals for better things... like striking impudent commentators.

Or perhaps helping itinerant voyagers haul their sporty craft up the shingle...

barney, I have a red wheelie thing to propel stuff across the road, I just have to load and unload it ... Not so with the coal and the soap mixture though - that has to be coldly lifted and manipulated ... :-) In thirty years, I expect to have someone younger and stronger doing this work for me ... And FYI, my pectorals are my own business, thankyou very much, impressive though they are ...!!

soaplady from a cloud of exaggeration

if they're tall sporty male voyagers, there wouldn't be a problem there, believe me ...!

FC, FC, you are not daring to suggest that estwhile navigators may become inadvertantly landbound, I hope? Catty comment, I'd say.

Barney from Swithiod the navigator

There's no romance in humphing heavy loads in skin blistering winds when no matter how hard you work and how much you're sweating you don't realise how cold your hands and feet have got until you finally kick your wellies off infront of the fire and the pain of your extremities defrosting tells you how much you'd love a machine to do it for you!

Physical labor is alright, as far as it goes. The good life requires something extra as well. Moderation in all things. I would not want to study the Torah or the Koran day twenty four hours a day any more than I would want to heft hay or cut/hoist peat ceaselessly. Variety and choice are quite wonderful to have, I think.

Soaplady, male - yes sporty - just possibly but not aggro so. tall - everything is relative Do I understand from your comment that you would generously assist any t.s.m.v. to relaunch his vessel, or is your mind on other things? What if only s.m.v., or m.v., or .. v? Or perhaps you imply that the vigour of your assistance would be in the inverse relationship to the above order? No wonder that males and females have such difficulties communicating unambiguously. Mars bars and venus shells, but not a groatie buckie in sight.

Barney from Swithiod better late than never
