I-
Proud To Be An Indian is the story of I . This character
is played by Sohail Khan who has also produced this movie.
He
comes to Britain to live with his brother (Aasif Sheikh) and father
(Kulbhushan Kharbanda) who reside in London's East End.
As
he explores the neighbourhood, he comes across a group of skin heads.
They have been terrorising the Asian community living in the area
for years.
Unable
to tolerate their behaviour, I decides to teach these yobs
a lesson. But the gang leader, headed by Cane (Tim Lawrence), takes
this as a challenge and sends more of his men after I.
The
situation escalates to a point where a battle between the skinhead
gang and I begins to unfold. It's at this point that you
need to be warned.
The
sequences that follow are definitely not for the weak hearted. There
is a lot of blood, gore and racial language which we are forced
to witness.
The
entry of UK's Bollywood hero, Aslam (Imran Khan) adds more impact
to the film. He joins hands with I to eliminate the gang
but in the process he gets killed.
This
drives I to challenge the gang for the last time. What happens
next forms the climax of this action pack film based in the UK.
Producer
Sohail Khan needs to be praised for being different. He has chosen
a story which has never been attempted before in Hindi cinema.
Director
Puneet Sira has portrayed all aspects of racism in the 1980's Britain
with reality. He has used UK based locations to add further impact
to the narration.
Kulbhushan
Kharbanda leaves a lasting impression as the worried father. His
high calibre acting will always be appreciated by all.
Sohail
Khan gets a chance to play the action hero. His physique matches
the character of I. Next, we'll see him in a different light
in Ekta Kapoor's spine chiller, Krishna Cottage.
Both
Heena Tazleem and Imran Khan have made an effective Bollywood debut
in this film. Let's hope that with time, they can make their mark
in Hindi cinema.
Overall,
I - Proud To Be An Indian is a film for adults due to its
strong racial content. Some sequences could disturb some UK cinema
goers who might have experienced similar situations.
Due
to its certification and racial content, the film might only appeal
to a selected few. This will affect its takings at the box office.
