Krish
(John Abraham) is a tiger expert working for the National Geographic. He
is asked to cut his holiday short to investigate the recent deaths in the Jim
Corbett National Park. With
his young wife, Riya (Esha Deol), Krish sets off into the jungle.
Meanwhile
Dev (Vivek Oberoi), a lover of cars, decides to test his new four
wheeler by taking his girlfriend Ishika (Lara Dutta) and two friends
Sajid (Kushal Punjabi ) and Vishal (Vishal Malhotra) on a weekend
trip to his farmhouse.
But
much to Dev disappointment, his car breaks down. So they are forced
to hire a driver who can take them to their destination. But soon
their plans change and the group ends up in the National Park.
On
their way into the jungle, the group comes across Krish and Riya who are having
problems with their vehicle.
So
the two groups find their way deep into the tiger infested jungle.
But as night falls, strange things begin to happen. The driver is
first to die, terrifying the group.
Despite this incident, Dev, Krish and rest of the
group move into the 'core area' of the tiger infested jungle. It
is at this point that they meet the mysterious Kaali Pratap (Ajay Devgan) wielding
a long stick. He comes to their aid as they are about to be attacked by three
hungry tigers. 'Obey
the rules of the jungle or the jungle will kill you', is Kaali's advice to the
group.
By
now, all routes out of the jungle are closed due to a heavy downpour.
Only Kaali can help them now. .
But
as they try to get out of the park, one by one they face an horrific
death. Can the rest escape this unseen force which is about to take
their lives?
There
is a nasty twist in the final reel which will catch you unawares
as the remaining survivors make their getaway. But can they escape??
Kaal
has the feel of the Blair Witch Project and Ram Gopal Verma's Bhoot. It also has
the thrilling edge of Jurassic Park. Most
important, Kaal succeeds what it sets out to do and that is to scare the living
daylights out of you! The film plays on your mind long after you leave the
auditorium. Director
Soham successfully manages to execute each scene with a lot of thought which adds
authenticity to the story as it unfolds on screen. Coupled
with cinematography, sound and background score, Kaal turns out to be a slick
Bollywood horror, setting new standards for many new Hindi films to come.
Two
songs appear in the film - one at the start and one at the end of
the film over the credits. The dance sequences are brilliantly choreographed
by Farah Khan which sees a fresh looking Shah Rukh Khan gyrating
to the music.
The
performances of the three lead characters are perfect. Ajay Devgan
is subdued, which is what his character requires.
Vivek
Oberoi plays that carefree character whilst John is perfect as the National Geographic
specialist with his rugged jungle looks. Both
Lara Dutta and Esha Deol have played their short roles very well. Both girls get
a chance to act in their respective scenes which will scare you to death! With
its slick direction and brilliant locations to suit the ambience of the horror/ghost
story, Kaal sets new standards in Hindi filmmaking. Already
it has turned out to be a success at the UK box office. Worth seeing! Reviewed
