A
Punjabi melodrama focusing on Surjit Singh who emigrates to Canada for better
prospects leaving behind his wife and daughter.
But
to gain Canadian citizenship he marries for a second time breaking
all connections with his family back in Punjab.
Concealing
this dark secret from his doctor son Varyam (Harbhajan), he reveals
all on his death bed making his son promise to fulfill his last
wish - for Varyam to take his ashes back to Punjab where his first
wife is to perform his last rites.
Upon
his arrival in Punjab, Varyam gets familiar with its colourful culture and religious
rituals, building a strong relationship with his stepfamily who are unaware of
his visit. But
all hell breaks loose when his true identity and his purpose comes to the fore
with devastating consequences. In
the wake of recent urban themed releases, director Manmohan Singh's family orientated
film with Punjabi values comes as a refreshing change on to the big screen.
Singer
turned actor, Harbhajan Mann does full justice to his role as a
son prepared to forsake all to fulfill his dying father's wish by
effectively demonstrating the vulnerability and determination of
Varyam.
Japji
Khaira is the surprise package giving a realistic performance as the local village
belle who falls for Varyam's charms. On
the whole, Mitti Wajaan Mardi is a wholesome family entertainer steeped highly
in Punjabi cultural values and tear-jerking moments. Worth
a watch.
