Nick Hanson is a Development Producer and he knows all about The School Run
What is The School Run?
School Run is a new interactive 360° reality series following a diverse mix of UK families as they all travel to and from school. It mixes the viral potential of TV shows and formats like The Secret Life of Five Year Olds and James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke with Goggle Box Style entertainment.
It was devised and produced by London-based independent multi-platform production company Spirit Media.
What was the inspiration behind it?
We want to explore new content formats in both 360 and interactive and The School Run has lots of potential for this. It’s a scenario that all families can relate to. It can be the most stressful part of the day or it can be the only time a family really spends together.
It’s also an interesting concept for 360 video as the audience feel they are inside the vehicle with the family and can follow the conversation as it happens all around them.
How was it made?
The School Run was shot by pacing a 360 camera rig in the car with each family. We then used a platform called Eevo to create interactive audio and video hotspots within the 360 video. This allows the users to choose which family they wish to stay with throughout the school run. At points in the film, they can chose to switch vehicles and join another family.
