When does winter begin?
It depends whether you are referring to the meteorological calendar, or the astronomical calendar鈥
The meteorological calendar separates the seasons in three-month periods:
- Spring = March, April, May
- Summer = June, July, August
- Autumn = September, October, November
- Winter = December, January, February
This consistency makes it simpler to assess and compare weather data.
However, the astronomical calendar is determined by the tilt of the Earth and it's orbit around the Sun. This year, Winter begins on 21 December 2024, this is usually the date on which the winter solstice falls, marking the longest night of the year.
