Role play games are a great way to get children using their imagination. And kids love superheroes, so what could be more fun than a bit of superhero role play?!'

Get them to name their superpowers, decide on an outfit and go on a mission to save the world.

By talking to them about imaginary situations, they get to hear all sorts of words outside of the everyday things they see and hear.

Why superhero role play is good for children's learning

  • Playing superheroes gets children thinking imaginatively.
  • Choosing what super powers they want to have, helps them to practice making choices.
  • Using lots of language throughout play allows them to hear words that are out of the ordinary, words for actions and describing words.
  • It encourages them to use longer sentences and phrases as you ask them simple questions

Superhero role play ideas

First things first, they're going to want to come up with an outfit to wear. You could make them a 'cape' out of a towel, sheet or tea towel tucked into their collar. You could try asking them what they wear as a superhero.

Get them thinking imaginatively - ask them 'what superpower do you have?'. If they respond, build on what they say and ask more questions. For example, if they say 'fly' you could say 'you'd like to fly! How high can you fly?' and see if they respond further.

If they are a bit shy, you could prompt with questions like, 'would you like to breath fire or be super strong?'.

If they say a word almost correctly, don't correct them, but repeat the word back to them correctly in a sentence.

Have fun acting out their suggestions - you could pick them up and 'fly' them around.

Describe what they're doing as you go - 'you're flying high up in the air and coming to the rescue!'.

Take turns - mummy or daddy can be a superhero too! What would you choose?
