2008: Kosovo declares independence from Serbia
Kosovo formally declared its independence from Serbia in February 2008.
It had been under UN control since 1999 when Nato drove out Serb militias.
Europe's major powers and the United States recognised Kosovo鈥檚 independence, but the declaration met with a hostile response by Serbia and its ally Russia.
