1938: Chamberlain returns from negotiations with Hitler

Richard Dimbleby records Chamberlain's statement, given on 24 September 1938 at Heston airport on his return from a meeting with Hitler in Bad Godesberg. This was the second trip Chamberlain had made with the aim of achieving a peaceful settlement with Hitler. Any acknowledgement of the likelihood of war is not given in this unofficial statement, only the assertion that the Sudeten problem must be resolved successfully, since 'on that turns the peace of Europe in our time'.
Chamberlain met Hitler in Bad Godesberg on 22 September, only to hear him demand that the Sudetenland be annexed by Germany and the Czechoslovaks evacuated soon afterwards. In this recording, Chamberlain expresses the desire for "peace... in our time". It was an expression he infamously used on his return from Munich after obtaining the agreement that would supposedly avoid the need for war.
