Using his logbook, Captain J Fryer (master of tugboat Foremast 87) recounts details of how, on 30 May 1940, he received orders to go to Dunkirk. He arrived at 2.45pm to witness heavy firing, shelling and bombing, which from a distance made the area resemble "fairyland". By midnight, the tug, under heavy barrage, had helped to manoeuvre several ships, collecting troops along the way, before heading back to Dover.
This recording was made for, but not included in, the programme Dunkirk: A Personal Perspective. It is unlikely to have been broadcast before, either in part or in its entirety.
