Killed by a badger

Curator's Choice: A grave reminder at the Lackham Museum of Agriculture and Rural Life...

Jock & Spider King

"Jock & Spider King...

"These are the names given to two animals featured on a row of seven gravestones at Lackham Museum of Agriculture and Rural Life based at Wiltshire College Lackham, Lacock, near Chippenham.

"Jock... met his end in a rather grisly fashion whilst flushing out a badger"

Andrew Davies - Museum Curator

"Jock appears to have been a terrier who met his end in a rather grisly fashion whilst flushing out a badger on the Lackham estate; whilst poor old Spider King met his end during a local horse race.

"Spider King's headstone not only features the tragic story of his demise (a matter of only nine days after his most famous victory), but also one of the poor horse's iron shoes! His name appears to have been taken from that linked to Louis XI of France.

"The headstones date from the era of George Llewellen Palmer, the former High Sheriff of Wiltshire in 1903 and owner of the Lackham estate. They were removed many years ago from the original site of the animal's last resting place in the nearby woods."
