Addicted To Bass...

Bryan Burnett | 20:00 UK time, Friday, 29 July 2011

Bass guitar

It's Vic Galloway looking after Get It On for Bryan all week and I've definitely scored on Monday, as the theme is 'basslines'.

We all like a great vocal melody, a fat (phat?) beat and a tasty guitar lick, but what would a song be without a good bassline? Some music is about little more. Lots of funk, reggae, techno and hip-hop is dominated by the bassline... As are a lot of the best songs EVER! Think about 'The Chain' by Fleetwood Mac, 'Pump it up' by Elvis Costello and 'Another one bites the dust' by Queen - they all have iconic basslines. It might be at the start, the end or running throughout the song, but a funky bassline can give a song the necessary swing and groove it needs to feel right.

So on Monday tap into your low-end theory, and get deep, down and dirty... I want your bass-line related suggestions and requests!

    MONDAY

    Welcome back, Uncle Vic!

My request is an Ian Anderson interpretation of a J.S. Bach composition. A wee bit Jazzy, it's maybe more Stephen Duffy's taste than your own; but it'll make a nice change from the "funky bassline" on 'Living in the Past'.

You can't have a bass night without featuring the legendary of The Funk Brothers who played on most major Motown hits of the 60's as well as a host of other famous acts, songs and soundtracks. (Starsky and Hutch TV theme anyone). Legend has it That when Marvin gaye was recording What's going on he had to trawl the local bars to find him and when they got him to the studio he recorded WGO flat on his back. However the bass line he'll probably be best remembered for is the

Temptations version of Papa was a Rolling Stone

whose instrumental b side won a grammy. How often does that happen?

  • Comment number 32.

Kenny Baker was not only the major bass player with MFSB the houseband of the Philadelphia International label of the 70's backing such acts as the O'Jays, harold Melvin & the Bluenotes, Three degrees, Lou rawls, billy paul et al, but was also a member of the Trammps and played bass on all their big hits as well.

    another excuse to ask for
Let's Clean up the Ghetto / Philadelphia international allstars

  • Comment number 33.

Bootsy Collins will always be associated with Parliament - funkadelic as possibly the greatest funk bassists of all time. However before he joined George Clinton's troops he was a member of the original JB's backing james Brown.

    Transmission ~ Joy Division
    Barbecutie ~ Sparks
    Love Song ~ T. Damned
Roxette ~ Dr. Feelgood... best back beat to Wilko's manic playin' ever!

  • Comment number 35.

Vic, if the guitar at the top of the page belonged to jack bruce it wouldn't have any frets on it.

Hopefully we'll get to hear something other than 'Sunshine' - it's easy to get confused by jack bruce basslines, because he very often plays the instrument the way other people play lead.

This is quite neatly demonstrated on the track Make Love - Jack Bruce - from the album A Question of Time

This is easy drivetime music, Vic. On top of which he hails from Glasgow, sold 35m records between 1967 and 1969 and has influenced following generations of bass players, including Jaco Pastorious, no less.

I think we should rename Glasgow Airport after him, but failing that, then given all the fuss that's made of Scottish 80's bands on the show, I think our finest bassist at least deserves to be heard on Get It On for his solo work.

Would be good to hear a female bassist, too. Carole Kaye on

I got to see the legendary Jaco Pastorious in 1979 when he was with Weather Report at the Apollo promoting the brilliant "Heavy Weather" album.I first heard him when he played on Joni Mitchell's "Hejira"album in 1976 and was blown away by the brilliant subtle interplay between Joni's plangent guitarwork and his incredible rolling basswork."Birdland" or "A Remark You Made"from "Heavy Weather"would be cool or even better, the title track from "Hejira"or "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter"Stupendously talented and sadly another rock casualty,Cheers,Willie Bartke
