Speaking to the saviour...of the England team
It's every girl's dream. Looking into the eyes of David Beckham and getting him to whisper sweet nothings to you. Which is what I did, except for the last bit - it wasn't sweet nothings, but he did give me a good interview.
It was all positive going into the game against Ecuador - the squad looked relaxed, and everyone was looking forward to a good performance, finally, from England in Stuttgart.
The atmosphere in the city was quite something - I heard around 85-thousand England fans had piled into the bars, even if less than half that actually got into the game...seeing those hundreds of St. George's flags still sends shivers down my spine - this is it, knockout football, the real deal, when it really matters.
I took up my position and soaked it all up - I was buzzing...a bit nervous, but buzzing. Then, 90 minutes later, totally non-plussed. England won, but they still looked rubbish. Becks hit back at his critics with that free-kick, but most of the fans came out of the stadium thinking "how did we get away with that?"
I grabbed Wayne Rooney for a quick chat afterwards - not every girl's dream, admittedly. He tried to spin it positively, but the fact is they've got to improve big-time if they're gonna beat Portugal and reach the semi-finals. So another week for me in Baden-Baden - to be honest, I wasn't ready to pack my bags, anyway.

I'm still not convinced that Beckham is anywhere near his best, and the calls from Terry Butcher for the dropping of Beckham are semi justified, given his current form (or lack of it).
However; except for Lennon, we have no one that can effectively play in his place, so I guess we're stuck with him.
We did not play well, and haven't played well for the majority of the World Cup so far...I have no idea what Sven and Steve think they are playing at with the multitude of different players, formations, strategies and so on. Why they can't stick to one fluid formation is beyond me.
Like everyone says though, we are through to the Quarter Finals, which is a GOOD thing, but we will need to improve, and ensure that each player on the field not only knows their role, but is playing at 100%, NOT at a sub standard 60% - I'm looking at you, Lampard and Gerrard!
BTW, nice blog - puts the rest of the so called "presenters" to shame ;)

Put it this way we are through to the quater finals without playing well so the boys are saving themselves to kick some Portuguese butt! We will have our revenge for 2004!
O and this Butcher guy saying Becks shouldn't be captain?! Who is he anyway? Noone could Captain better than Becks and we will be in the semis.... just you wait and see!

Through to quarters barely breaking a sweat and as yet totally untested. Ecuador were so so so poor, even 1 down with 10 mins left they still didnt commit more than 5 players forward.
One interesting theme in this world cup is the pundits trying to say something shocking in order to make themselves heard amongst the army of pundits. Best to make your own mind up and avoid some of the dross they come up with. Terry Butcher says Carrick didnt work and system wasnt right, as does Graham Taylor. In stark contrast Shearer and Alan Hansen both say Carrick was man of the match and system will suit all attacking players.
If I didnt know better I'd accuse some of the pundits of wanting a little limelight!
Anyway, what matters is winning this tournament and you don't do that sitting around talking, so lets find some good oranges, cut them into segments, and enjoy them.
