Hey blogsters

I鈥檓 blogging today while wearing my Radio 1 playlist hat rather than one of Chris鈥 Producers on The Chris Moyles Show.

Playlist is when the Radio 1 Music Team get together with a handful of Producers from around the building and discuss all things music. We discuss what songs should go on the Radio 1 playlist, how many times they should be played in a week and which ones have been played enough so should come off.

Chris finds the fact that I鈥檓 one of the people in this very cool meeting hilarious seeing as my musical knowledge clearly starts at Michael Jackson in 1987 (give or take the odd Abba song). And it鈥檚 no secret that my musical flava sits heavily in the Girls Aloud / Madonna / Britney camp. But then you see that鈥檚 the beauty. If Radio 1鈥檚 playlist meeting was made up of just musical snobs that reference Pink Floyd everytime a cheesy dance or pop track comes along then the playlist might be 鈥渃ool鈥 but it wouldn鈥檛 be very fun! Which is where playlist member like myself and Coxy鈥檚 producer Megan come in.

So far today we鈥檙e probably going to add the new ones from The Ordinary Boys, BeatFreakz and The Magic Numbers. Also going on are cool band Hot Chip with 鈥淥ver and Over鈥 the poppyest single off their current album, and (against my will) the new one from Trivium 鈥 you can blame The Chris Moyles Show Exec Producer Rhys for that one!

We鈥檝e also heard the new ones from Beyonce and Rogue Traders which will hopefully be going on next week. I hope so because I like both of them.

It's also a bonus that they serve chocolate muffins in playlist which normally results in a eat-off between me and Executive Producer Rhys to gobble as many as possible before the other one nabs them.

Right, better go. There's a guitar band on now that I've never heard of so better do my research before I'm asked my opinion!

With regard to the playlist and something someone alluded to earlier, why is Your Call on Scott Mills show just the playlist? Is it because they need to fit in as many of the songs on the playlist in before they go onto the 'trendy stuff' later in the day? I feel my 'please play hendrix' texts are a waste of 12p.
I am excited about the new songs though Aled, any deviation from the current stuff that has been on way to much, will be like manna from heaven.

I have mixed opinion over the playlist. If I really satisfied my urge to stick needles in my eyes every time I heard Rudebox, Stars Are Blind or Sexyback, I'd have been blind after the first listen. But I've heard the new Magic Numbers tune and Hot Chip fully deserve to get more recognition than they have got from the mainstream shows, so I'm pleased they'll figure on it.

However, I know that the labels have a great deal of influence over what gets played, and I undertand the politics behind such decisions. You need the labels as much as they need Radio 1.

Hmm, whilst we're on the subject, can you get the Scott Mills show (namely the presenter of the same name) to rename his feature from 'Your Call' to 'Your Call As Long As It's On The Playlist'. What a rip.

Whoops, set yourself up for a fall there. Now I know who to moan at when I leave work at 5pm after having heard The Ordinary Boys for the fifth time that day. Have you ever thought about rotating the list from show to show so it varies it?

Really enjoy the banter in the morning's but the music is far too pop for my liking. Considering the huge number of listeners you guys have, it's nice to see some other music styles other than the usual mainstream tunes you hear everywhere else.

Up until now, the best thing you guys have had was the brief life of 'Ram ring' where I at least got some Rammstein!!

It is nice to know that the licence fee is being used in such a careful way. There was me thinking that you just put the names of your favourite artists into a hat and let a monkey draw them out one by one whilst you all took off down the pub. Who told me that, I don't know. I didn't really believe them, honest.

Not that I will ever have any influence over what Radio 1 plays, but I would like to see more by some more established acts. I believe the New Seekers are undergoing a small renaissance at the moment.
