My Monaco GP photo (and video) diary

Post categories:

Jake Humphrey | 13:49 UK time, Wednesday, 27 May 2009

So, as promised, here are a few videos and photo's to give you a unique look at from my perspective. I shot the video on my little digital camera so don't expect !!

This first video is our arrival for race day. Thanks to we were a fair drive away and this was shot about 7.30am. I saw the smoke coming from the hillside...not sure what it was but it encouraged me to get out my camera. As you can see is in the car and we have a rather well known driver too...

I am a bit of a sporting geek - you may have spotted. I particularly love sporting history and even last week I went to visit a friend in hospital in South London and drove to .

A trip to is on the cards later in the year, so you can only imagine how exciting it was to be able to stand on the start/finish straight at Monaco where so many legends have walked before me... I nearly got run down but it was worth it.

Start / finish straight, Monaco

The filming on the track with DC was incredible... our breakfast stop didn't make the final cut on air so here it is!

You may think it's , and as much as the yacht was very classy, the only way to get there was ... and I nearly fell in despite once being a member of the 24th Norwich ...!

What you don't see on air. Well played John for going the extra mile for the perfect shot of EJ. We were all keen to do a link in the Jacuzzi but for some reason the bosses weren't as keen....strange!

David Coulthard, Jake Humphrey, Eddie Jordan in action

And the work doesn't stop. Making notes, scripting the "outro", watching the action... that's me. As for David and Eddie....

So there you go. The Monaco GP through my eyes. You know, looking back at it, not diving in the Jacuzzi was a missed opportunity I think. Oh, well, maybe next year between now and then!

This blog keeps getting more entertaining - more video content!

The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú coverage and your presenting remains excellent so keep up the great work.

One question, if it hasn't already been answered: Did you have a contingency plan if the weather was bad at Monaco? ITV used a yacht in 1997, but due to the bad weather the boat rocked wildly around leaving Jim Rosenthal and Tony Jardine desperately hanging on to the boat. Apparently Simon Taylor, the second analyst, refused to board!

Here's a shot of them tilting rather steeply upwards!

Another excellent blog Jake, love the videos. Thanks for sharing the dream with us!

I do love your blogs. They always make me laugh. Keep up the good work

Fantastic blog Jake. Great videos and pictures. Thank you very much.

As a fan of sporting history (like myself), might I suggest, along with a trip to the Monza Banking, a trip around the old Spa as well. A fantastic circuit which, as it's public roads, you can go around any time of the day.

Great blog! It's great to see the things that don't really "matter" on video - you're all having a good time there, I'm so jealous of you.

DC looks like a really relaxed, normal guy.

    More video blogs, Jake! Moar!

Another great blog entry Jake. :) The video content really boosted it this time around, liking the driver comparison with Sarkozy. :P

Keep up the brilliant work with the presenting - your doing a superb job bud.

Jake I am amazed by all of the content that you are putting forward from your grand prix experiences. You guys have really moved the F1 coverage on at a vast rate this year. These glimpses behind the scenes are amazing. Thanks for the insight.

Later in the season I hope that the history of Monza and the banking forms part of the preview show for the Italian Grand Prix. A similar feature at the Nurburgring with a tour around the Nordschleife would be great.

I'm not familiar with the workings of twitter yet, however I shall look at this as I find your behind the scene's insight fascinating. Great work Jake.

    Excellent video blog! :)

  • Comment number 11.

Interesting insight... but as far as your camera work goes, don't give up the day job.

  • Comment number 12.

great blog but how big was the boat you were on

  • Comment number 13.

Any chance of a tour of the great concrete curves at Monza when you get there?

    Hi Jake,

Another great blog mate. Having been sailing myself I know how tricky it can be to get out of a dingy, onto a boat, at sea, without getting wet (i did spectate a few who didnt manage it) so I guess it was a lot of pressure to make sure that didnt happen to you guys. Well it would have made an interesting opening to the show! Looking forward to Turkey.

Great stuff! Really interesting. Sounds like you're having a great time! (Even Eddie & DC look like they're enjoying each others company in that photo!)

Another top blog Jake, great to see the weekend through your eyes and you certainly travelled in style throughout the weekend. You should definitely, if you haven't done so already, go for a few laps around Silverstone. Sporting history, an apt way to say goodbye to it and a lot of fun all rollled into one!

Excellent blog - Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú coverage is so much better than the rubbish that ITV used to have on. Excellent work and keep it up. Would also be good if some of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú team could get involved on 606 - if there was enough time.

Would love to see some videos of the Nordschlife when you guys are over there - you could get DC or even Sabine Schmidt to take you around the old track, that would be an experience and a half.

  • Comment number 18.

    Cracking blog

Keep up the good work Jake.

Simon Arron does a good blog for the Telegraph

Just how does the F1 fraternity put up with the likes of Mark Hughes who have great analytical F1 mind and yet can be a complete nightmare to live with!

  • Comment number 19.

I noticed you were following Sniff Petrol ( on Twitter, Jake - it's great to see you're up to speed with some of the more satirical comments about your coverage! It seems to me that you've managed to escape relatively unscathed so far (unlike EJ)!

PS Better remove the extraneous apostrophe in the first line before the grammar police catch you...!

  • Comment number 20.

Niceone Jake , more of the same , but with longer vids , And gets some tips from your camera op's , Or better still ask me ........! .

  • Comment number 21.

Great Blog Jake! It's exciting to have such an insight into your job and the great atmosphere that surrounds F1. Keep up the great work!

  • Comment number 22.

I want your job ;) Keep up the good work, I really enjoy your segments with DC and Eddie, the 3 of you are jelling very nicely and providing some decent segments.

Just back from Monaco - stunning weather & stunning weekend. We could see the commentary team from our stand but we thought you would have stayed on the boat! It was a decent size of craft, but far from the biggest in the harbour.
We rented an apartment in Nice & travelled daily by train 13.60 Euros return.
I don't want to even think about looking at my VISA bill - stand tickets cost a total of 740 euros for the Thursday, Sat & Sun each person! - happy to be part of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú team & on expenses next year.
Enjoyed your blog & catching up with the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú coverage - keep up the good work.

  • Comment number 24.

Excellent stuff Jake, loving the videos - look forward to more of the same from the future races!

I can't wait to visit the old banking at Monza either - will see you there:)

What an amazing blog! Keep up the good work! :)

  • Comment number 26.

Glad to see people like DC who have had TV cameras around them for over a decade still feel necessary to give a nervous little wave to a video camera!
Great work Jake, keep it up! Really enjoying the behind the scenes insight! Its insightful

  • Comment number 27.

    Jake,

Your blog just gets better & better keep filiming so that we can all see how you get at each g.p. I also enjoyed the drive around with D.C. it was brilent to get a drivers eye view of the bariers.
    well done

  • Comment number 28.

great videos, tv coverage and general blog content! the banter between DC, EJ, Martin Brundle and yourself adds so much the coverage that now my wife is starting to watch! when you get to Monza try to get to the top of the banking without using your hands... its impossible and gives you a real perspective just how steep the curves are!!

    keep it up

  • Comment number 29.

Excellent excellent coverage behind the scenes. Its all very interesting.

  • Comment number 30.

    Cool Videos Jake,

More behind the scenes videos are well cool and great!

    Keep Up Fantastic Work!

Just seen DC on Britains Got Talent with Len Goodman.

    What a combination!

Keep your great blogs up XD

Hi Jake, awesome stuff here and on the TV broadcasts, I have to say you really know your stuff, it's nice to have a presenter who actually knows what they're on about - the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú coverage is SO much better than ITV's. It's also nice to see that you're not letting it all go to your head, you seem really down to earth about the whole thing, makes it seem like we're there too, which is nice, especially in the forum.
A quick question - is Sunil (I hope I got his name right - the chap who picks the music) a Muse fan by any chance. I counted 3 songs just last weekend. Although being a Muse fan myself, they do make fantastic backing music to Formula 1 :)
Anyway, keep up the good work, and I have to say, awards may follow!

  • Comment number 33.

Brilliant work, dude....keep it up! More like this pls.

  • Comment number 34.

Woo hoo!! You're on Twitter now too! Great!

More of this blog please - vids particularly brilliant.

So since I asked for you to register with Twitter, I'll try another request - can you please please please consider splicing in some race footage into the opening credits of the show? I want to watch it and go "ooh that must have hurt", and "yeah I remember that - great race"... etc etc.

    Keep up the good work!

  • Comment number 35.

Great blog Jake - very entertaining and adds a further dimension to the coverage that means that the season really feels like it is going on every day and not just every couple of weeks when a race is on.

  • Comment number 36.

Another great blog Jake. Nice insight into the Monaco GP coverage.

  • Comment number 37.

I took a few random photos of the boats in the harbour (I was near Tabac) and it was only days later that I realised that I've now got you, Eddie and DC in my family album. It was a really nice surprise.

  • Comment number 38.

very good coverage of all the races.one question though, can we have more suzy perry please!

  • Comment number 39.

I really enjoy the blog and Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú coverage - thanks. And the season is brilliant! One question. I went to Monaco a few years back and we were able to walk through the pits when there was no racing on. Can you still do that with the new(ish) pit lane layout? Thanks K

  • Comment number 40.

I've literally just returned from Monaco having made a lastminute booking on the back of the fabulous coverage last weekend. Was brilliant to walk around the track and see sites before they finished taking it all down.

Now I'm home I'm annoyed though that I didn't have the courage to say 'Hi!' as I stood next to you and DC sorting out your helicopter earlier today at the concierge's!

  • Comment number 41.

I am liking these blogs Jake...they really enlighten the race weekends that you have covered.
You also show that you do have some fun at the weekend.

  • Comment number 42.

Thank you for your wonderful insight, just one thing...Please more videos, it looks like great fun although it must be wierd with all the different times.
