Prospects for Thursday, 3 July

Brian Thornton | 11:09 UK time, Thursday, 3 July 2008

Good morning. It's raining and the last Brit has just been dumped out of Wimbledon - so it must be July. But it's not quite silly season yet - there are lots of strong stories around... which ones do you think we should cover?

Here are the early thoughts of the programme producer Robert Morgan:

"There are lots of stories around today. We have an interview about the credit crunch with US Treasury Secretary, Henry Paulson. We also have an interview with Brooke Kinsella on knife crime which will be done this afternoon. The Columbia hostage story is extraordinary. There's also a vote on MPs expenses and allowances that could be worth doing.

is there any chance that our Prime Minister even though he has a crowded in-tray could take a break in Columbia and you never know he could return in six years...a hero. Right now I think he would even welcome it.

It's not quite silly season, but you're still reporting a brutal double-murder in our capital city, 4 days after the event. Why?
I trust you'll be giving Ms Kinsella the opportunity to elaborate, should she wish to do so, on her comments yesterday that information was being with-held by the police, that she'd been told that it would be very difficult to secure a conviction in this case, and why the police weren't treating her brother's murder as either racial or gang-related.
I'd ask again for the programme to carry a report on the coverage of the recent spate of murders in London.

The expenses story could be interesting. What does it say about how they see their future. Are the Labour MPs getting de-mob happy and don't care what people think.

Are the Tories trying to create a whiter than white image.

Also what about Scotland and the 2010 referendum. It is relevant now. As an example we signed up for the aircraft carriers today I think but will we have enough crew if the Scots are by then independent? How will the tax revenues be affected by many Scots living in England - will they elect to pay tax in Scotland etc?

Also extraordinary renditions. Thats gone quite quiet. I don't think the government can feasably resort to the line of doing more investigation but having no evidence. If they want it they can get it.

"For every £1 we spend at the pump we give 70 pence to the government. Only a country (sorry to say) with a population as limp as ours would put up with such a rip-off."

The word ain't 'limp', its 'drunk.' Remember the 24 hr drinking offer to the electorate from our socialist Govt via text message? do you remember the Clintonesque style of electioneering; giving the stupid masses what they want using focus groups to determine their wishes and desires and modeling a policy on results gained from the focus group studies and then change policies when the election was won..."referendum anyone?...no, we'll drop that one now where in"...most can't spell referendum let alone what it means. Keep them stupid, drunk and uninformed but we give them our vote because they gave us the opportunity to get caked up with booze 24/7...makes you proud to be British

I played buzzword-bingo last night whilst watching Newsnight. One of your guest came out with this one i ain't heard before:
    "Market sentiment".....
i shouted "house!" ..maybe i should've called out 'dwelling with potential!"

The big squeeze: put your experts away Newsnight, this is all you need to know about why we are heading for a recession: Banks lend money that they don't actually have and then charge interest on loans given, its called fractional banking, i call it wholesale fraud. Anyway, unfortunately they've just over-stretched their lending with risky clients and drunken no job mortgage borrowers who have nothing but a phone that receives texts messages telling them they can get drunk 24/7.

With the Carrier order now signed and the some what low key announcement that the Navies size is to be reduced still further.

In 1998 Labour held a SDR (Strategic Defense Review) , the Navy requested 16 type 45 ships , the SDR concluded they needed 12 type 45's , now its been announced only 6 type 45's will be built , whats changed ?

The Navy at the time said , the type 45's are indeed more powerful than previous air defense ships , but they still can not be in two places at once .

Have our world wide commitments changed ?

Or are we heading for another Falkland's mess , the Navy being cut temps a dictator to take over a British Dependence Territory again ?

Even the Sub fleet is being reduced in size , whats going on ?

Has Labour gone soft on defense again ?
