Thursday 17 December 2009 - in more detail

Verity Murphy | 17:28 UK time, Thursday, 17 December 2009

Here's Emily with what is coming up on the programme:

British Airways:

Today will either go down in history as a disaster for democracy or as a triumph for anyone who has to face Heathrow at Christmas, depending on how you view a 12 day airline strike.

BA is now hopping round more gleefully than Rudolph after a high court injunction forbade the Unite union from striking - over a balloting technicality.

The union says it is delighted not to be ruining travellers Christmases - no, they really did - but is considering a legal appeal.

Tonight we look at what's behind this strike - one of the longest attempts at industrial action the airline industry has ever seen - and ask if a power struggle within the union might lie at its heart.

Afghanistan:

Also tonight an incredible eyewitness film from Mark Urban who has been embedded with US marines as they try to push back the Taliban in Helmand province.

Expenses:

What happens if MPs decide not to pay back money that Sir Thomas Legg has declared they owe? We're about to find out.

Eighty Members of Parliament have begun a fight back, and accuse the man who reviewed their claims of behaving dishonestly.

Two hundred MPs were originally ordered to return hundreds of thousands of pounds - so how much legitimacy does he have if nearly half of them refuse?

And will the public chorus of "they just don't get it" continue? Or is the tide starting to turn?

Iran: Karroubi

And the man who lies at the centre of Iranian opposition politics have given us a rare interview - which he knows could land him in serious trouble.

What does he think of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and is he prepared to continue the fight against the current government?

Tonight, extraordinarily candid responses from a man who believes the Iranian revolution is only just beginning.

Do join us for that and more at 10.30pm on 麻豆官网首页入口 Two.

Perhaps as high salary high court judges are likely to be part of the international jet set and perhaps they ( or their mates ) travelling long haul on BA over the Christmas period Unite are hardly likely to get a fair hearing despite 92% of 80% of members in favour ( whatever the technical voting inaccuracies ) ?

JAMES GORDON BROWN - HAPPY BUNNY OF CLIMATE COBBLERS.

He keeps on smiling! He seems to be high on Carbon! He almost giggles at the very mention.

What should we infer from his demeanour?

From Gordon Browns recorded performance at Copenhagen today it would appear that he has totally lost touch with reality. Cameron is practicing the art of not being seen, safe in the knowledge that Brown is doing serious damage to any credibility he may have achieved by Panda introducing a bankers bonus tax and the subsequent narrowing in the polls. Of course Brown has to portray himself as a complete lunatic in order to prevent his proposed " Tobin Tax " idea ever being taken seriously.

having watched the iraq inquiry i'm a bit baffled by the need to defend it? so are the attacks upon it because it is revealing facts others would prefer to keep quiet?

its astonishing NN are ignoring it.or maybe not?

I've just heard on Ch4 news of a " leaked " IPPC report which states that even adding up all the proposed cuts in CO2 emissions by " developed " nations, the result will be a rise of 3C not the alleged 2C target. This must clearly demonstrate that all along the Copenhagen summit was simply a vehicle to introduce Carbon cap and trade in the interest of the Corporate Nazi's who run the world stock markets. Perhaps the lack of " success " at Copenhagen is a contributory factor in the FTSE falling over 100 points today ?

last time I remember Gordon behaving even more irrationaly than usual he was wrestling internally with the thought of calling an early election..

Interesting how Copenhagen seems to have dropped out of the news, surely 'No Deal' should at least be equally newsworthy as 'Deal'? Or perhaps it is because it seems bit silly to debate global warming while digging your car out of the snow....

The quote most insulting to human intelligence from the conference must however belong to the American senator (I forget his name - the guy who lost against Bush second time around...nuff said).

He earnestly paid a flying visit to the conference (you have got to laugh)to add his dramatic contribution. #

The USA would not enter into a deal unless developing countries had a carbon cap too..his justificaion for this (this is hilarious)''They should not make the same mistakes we have''.

    geeeeezzz

    Is it just me?

One can only wonder if full justice has has been properly done for the 15 year old girl whom, it would appear, has been sacrificed for the laughable belief in 鈥渇amily鈥 honour!

One aspect that is particularly galling is that the media continues to describe these appalling acts as 鈥渟o called 鈥榟onour鈥 killings鈥. There is no honour whatsoever in premeditated - and indisputable - murder. As a consequence there must surely be no leniency from the judicial system and absolutely no tolerance from the Great British Public.

Above this, if anything that raises concerns, is the maintenance of the belief that the honour of the family supercedes the expectation of life. It cannot ever be accepted in this, or any other, society for any reason whether cultural, ethnic, faith or status. If these crimes have any foundation in the belief in honour it is solely based upon the social ( -ly flawed ) concepts of male supremacy, dogma, kudos and - misappropriated and falsely - believed power. It is provocative and saddening to know that the full weight of the legal system will launch headlong at those that disrespect skin colour, disability, gender etc, - likewise the obscene consequences if a celebrity鈥檚 name dare be maligned - but within British society鈥檚 diverse communities the chosen option appears to be 鈥渉ands off鈥 at worst, and at best 鈥渁t arms length鈥 by way of respect for the Valhalla that is multiculturalism.

There is no question that many whom migrate to the UK come here to enjoy the British freedoms evolved over many centuries, many come to escape the social or religious constraint of there birth-land, others arrive aping Whittington but the question has to be asked as to why there appears to be, in recent years an evolving and increasing isolationism amongst certain former exogenous groups. Could it be that the very tolerance of the British people is now attractive to some newcomers that only seek to self-isolate knowing that they will not be obligated to fully integrate?

An interesting issue that has been highlighted by today鈥檚 case has, in fact, been unwittingly highlighted by the defence spokesman for one of the defendants found not guilty., he explained that his client was willing to be interviewed by the media but pointed out that his client鈥檚 english was not very good and would require translation. An 鈥榚xclusive鈥 interview broadcast later indeed required translation.

Assuming that the acquitted had lived here continuously ......

Would it be wrong to ask why a man accused of a crime ten years before still had considerable difficulty with speaking english?

And this - if correct - is of the gender that deems it has the right to reign supreme over the women of their community. So where does that leave the women?

Or does gender-equality only take effect if it doesn鈥檛 cause waves to enforce?

British law applies to all resident in the UK, tsunami or nay!

A CIVILISED (HONOURABLE)) APPROACH TO THE PROBLEM OF 'HONOUR' KILLING (#9)

Having established the precise dwelling-place of the offender, might we not send a rocket-equipped unmanned drone to 'take him out' like we do to Johnnie Foreigner in his homeland? If it works there, it must surely work here.

Good report Mark your family must have been concerned. You going back ? part of me wants to see some more of how that is going to continue and play out, but a better part is concerned for your safety and I guess I would hope you don't.

And hope it's how it's going to keep,
Though no doubt later on I鈥檒l have a snooze
In the evening or late afternoon.

It looks like there is progress in Copenhagen.
I enjoyed the Kenyan minister鈥檚 talk with a boy of about 7.
And below the link of it I duly enclose
Which to the bloggers to watch I propose.

Why hasn't the 麻豆官网首页入口 got this in the news?

They keep mithering on about Copenhagen and the non agreement, and ramming climate change down our throats.

But ignore the huge problem of overcrowding in this country! Can't they see that way anarchy lies? Resources will run out here very soon, especially money and patience.

Your link certainly requires more exposure, and is no doubt another attempted cover-up of really serious news.

"Serious doubts over the viability of the scheme to track people in and out of the country emerged today after the Government gave way to pressure from the European Commission over the collection of travellers' personal information"

The inability to check that visitors, students etc, had departed these shores was blamed by nulabour on a previous tory cost-cutting measure, yet the still-not-fit-for-purpose Home Office meekly concede it after massive expenditure.

"But the concessions to the European Commission threaten to undermine the whole reason for the system which was to enable officials to check travellers against watchlists of terrorists and criminals"

Even more serious as our homeland security, intelligence and police will not be eble to check the movement of terrorists and criminals.

"During the negotiations with the Commission, the Home Office agreed that the collection of the information will now be VOLUNTARY"

This beggars belief in it's naivety!

"The concessions offered by the Government means that it can no longer insist on obtaining the details of passengers and crew in advance of people travelling to the UK. Ministers had said that getting the information in advance meant the UK had exported its borders overseas as it would identify in advance travellers who are a potential risk. It would allow the UK Border Agency to check travellers against lists of people known to pose a threat and compile a profile of suspect passengers, their travel patterns and networks"

Like the failed 'points system for foreign students' the UK Border Agency was another of Gordo;s 'major immigration overhauls' to prevent undesirable ENTERING UK. Now the whole brunt on detection and detention will have to fall on ARRIVALS staff; not only costly (holding centres, court cases, appeals and escorted passages out, plus the standard 'bribe' to leave quietly) but an impossible task.

"Keith Vaz, chairman of the committee, said: 鈥淭he programme is intended to cost the taxpayer 拢1.2 billion and may be illegal. It is shocking that money has already been spent on a programme which could never be implemented. We cannot have another massive IT project which flounders or is even abandoned at huge cost to the taxpayer, it is simply unacceptable.鈥

The failed Minister/Innocent Bystander again criticises the government of which he is a member.

"Latest figures show only 38 per cent of passengers are being tracked under the e-Borders scheme because airlines, including German carriers, are not co-operating with the British authorites. Phil Woolas, the Immigration Minister, said: 鈥渆-Borders is fully compliant with EU law and this has been confirmed by the European Commission. Mr Woolas did not refer to the concessions made by the Government during negotiations with the EU."

Could be that other EU countries are not too concerned if undesirables depart their land for their favourite destination - UK. Neither, it seems is our Immigration Minister.

"Damian Green, the Shadow Immigration Minister, said: 鈥淥ver a billion pounds of taxpayers鈥 money has been spent on e-Borders and yet many of the most basic problems have not been resolved. The Government鈥檚 flagship policy to protect our borders is in danger of sinking.鈥

Scuttling would probably be a more appropriate word for our flagship.

#23 indignantindegene nobody is taking any notice of this problem are they. Especially the 麻豆官网首页入口! The GBP just seem to bury their heads in the sand, I try to talk about it with my family, none of them are very interested, except my very aged mother, she can see the writing on the wall.

The government capitulate on everything the EU only has to suggest, and yet I don't think the rest of europe follow the EU doctrine to the letter.

I notice other countries in europe pronounce that britain should have her fair share of immigrants.

I have a suggestion for europe, but no one will ever read it! ; )

How about each european country measures the inhabitable land mass of their country, that must be fairly easy these days with satelites etc. Then divide the land mass with the population, legal and illegal in each country. Those with the highest ratio of people to land, don't have any more immigrants, so we will become a net exporter of said immigrants, I'm sure. Why don't people ever look at the actual size of the country and not just it's wealth, you can't fit a quart into a pint pot, but now we've all gone metric they wouldn't understand that!!! ; )

We have a massive shortage of housing, and still insist on building on flood plains, why are people stupid enough to buy these houses. What looks like a pretty little stream in summer, can be running through one's house in the winter.

We have a thousand immigrants living in garden sheds in Slough, must be totally illegal, and absolutely unheard of 25 years ago, we are running backward as a country towards a third world state. If I were you Indi, and you've mentioned it many times, I'd join your son abroad as soon as possible, before you get too old! :o/ ;o)
