Here's Kirsty with details of tonight's programme:

President Ahmadinejad has been addressing thousands of Hezbollah supporters at a rally in southern Lebanon near the border with Israel - on a visit which both the US and Israel have said is intentionally provocative.

Our Diplomatic editor Mark Urban has been investigating how close the Iranians are to achieving nuclear capability, and tonight he sets out in fascinating detail how Israel might try to pre-empt a nuclear attack.

What does the 'big society' mean to you? Are you confused, perplexed?
Newsnight's Big Society correspondent Steve Smith has been ringing around the Cabinet trying to find out what various ministers are doing for the big society, in an attempt to glean what it means for them. We'll have the results tonight!

The government today wrestled hundreds of quangos to the ground, obliterating some and merging others, but to what end?

At first it was spun as part of the "cut deep and cut now" agenda, but now it's billed as the way to restore accountability in decision making.

So who will make the decisions made by the Horserace Totaliser Board, or the Advisory committee on Historic Wreck sites? And will there be opposition similar to the rearguard action taken over the British Film Institute?

Presumably a civil servant who is a sommelier in his spare time gets to take over the Government Hospitality Advisory Committee on the Purchase of Wines.

And, Baroness Thatcher was due to be celebrating her 85th birthday with David Cameron at Number 10 this evening, but she has been taken ill with flu.

Her former Chancellor Nigel Lawson and new generation Tory MP Louise Bagshawe will join us to discuss how much of a Thatcherite the current PM is.

Join me, Kirsty, at 10.30pm on 麻豆官网首页入口 Two.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From earlier:

As Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad continues a trip to Lebanon, Mark Urban has a report about the status of Iran's nuclear programme. Is it close to a tipping point? How likely is an Israeli strike on Iran and how would they do it?

Stephen Smith has been doing more digging on what exactly David Cameron's big society plan means, particularly to members of his Cabinet.

And we are looking at the so-called Bonfire of the Quangos as the government announces that 192 quangos are to be scrapped.

More details later.

    "WE ARE A PARTY POOPER"

Apparently Doting Dave sees Margaret Thatcher was a laudable British Prime Minister.

She certainly saw tobacco as an acceptable source of personal income, and arms, it appears, as just right for her son; while being a regular user of the drug alcohol. She bizarrely espoused the archaic 'royal plural' late in her reign.

Well Dave - you and I certainly go for a different kind of woman. And I can definitely say: WE HAVE GOT OURSELVES ANOTHER ONE.

That should reduce the crime report/detection rate.

There will be just as much (if not more crime), it will just be that fewer people will know about it and be deterred from committing it.

That's the way to do it - more anarchism's good for business. Well done the Con-Dems ;-)

"Our Diplomatic editor Mark Urban has been investigating how close the Iranians are to achieving nuclear capability, and tonight he sets out in fascinating detail how Israel might try to pre-empt a nuclear attack."

itll be a short report then. no evidence of iran pursuing a military nuclear weapon, nor any evidence of any nuclear material being diverted according to the iaea.

iran is in the npt and is under constant observation at its nuclear facilities.

but i cant wait for marks landmark exposing of irans nuclear threat as compared to israels and the usa.

as for the fascinating detail .. warhawks war mongering as usual. thats the problem with neo cons they dont need facts or truth just a compliant media.

i suppose as usual the elephant in the room - israels nukes and its alleged war crimes (according to various UN reports) and non compliance to international law and united nations resolutions will be overlooked.

Nuclear capability to do what though? (3-4%) or enrich uranium to (90%)? There's a BIG difference. One is legal and one hopes that Israel doesn't think it's justified in attacking Iran for doing something which is legal? It sometimes looks like the media counts on much of the public being so feminized that they it can't tell the difference?

Did Francis Maude use the words 'increasing accountability'? The why on earth has he spared the COMPLETELY UNACCOUNTABLE British Council. It is
so unaccountable IT IS OUT OF CONTROL!!! So why no action? Could it be
that it suits Whitehall to retain a body that appears in the index of
'MI6: The History of The Secret Intelligence Service 1909-1949' (Crown copyright 2010) as 'British Council, potential for cover 603' [see also
index entries for British Council founder Sir Rex Leeper]. And why is it
a charity? Charities are supposed to be at arms-length from Whitehall. The British Council is however joined at the hip with Government??? It
screws up almost everything it touches, is a diplomatic liability (eg in
Russia), and in any case education and cultural promotion are supposed
to be devolved to Scotland, English regions, Northern Ireland and Wales!

This is a complete nonsense. This body should be axed forthwith before it does any more damage .. Too bad if that upsets the spooks or indeed

BIG SOCIETY ETHOS IS INIMICAL TO STUFFED SHIRT POWER

I rather suspect that pragmatism divides the two groups. Those of us who probably embody the Big Society ethos, by default, tend to arrive at practical, least-costly answers to local problems or needs. Government is more or less the opposite pole.

Stuffed shirts fear the pragmatist; they get shown up, and feel a bit silly. Dave Snooty, of course, and his chums, are of the stuffed shirt variety. Unless we change the selection process for government, at all levels, this divide will endure.

Those who are better at the job that their boss, do not get promoted, they get eased out. It's the British way. Change will take a rise in maturity, yielding altruism and personal sacrifice. Currently, maturity is declining. Gunga Din must be allowed to function as the 'better man'.

I'd be interested to know why my earlier post covering 3% vs 90% uranium enrichment was delayed, and why interviewees were presented in support of Mark Urban's piece who had a clear brief in support of Israel's aggressive stance towards Iran. I'd also like to point out to Mark Urban that as Iran's nuclear facilities are on Iranian soil, it has every right to militarily defend those facilities under international law.

Does the 麻豆官网首页入口 not realise how provocative it is being with a programme like tonight's as well as the significance of the fact that behind Iran, there are both the PRC and Russia?

    CANCER STRAIN (#27)

Hi Lizzy. It seems probable we are still, essentially, the hunter/gatherer of 10,000 years ago, when beliefs and challenges were simple. But climate change (!) allowed us to 'advance' into agriculture and technology while shedding all taboos. To all intents and purposes, we went cancerous.

I see two fundamental HomSap traits: inquisitiveness, and immaturity; both are inherent. Left to ourselves, it is a moot point whether environmental change (of any genesis) clobbers us, or we roger ourselves. One thing seems certain: the number of individuals who address this, declines as fast as world population grows. It follows they make no measurable impact.

However, it exercises the mind to try to see a way out - even locally - but I reckon it is just that: exercise.

This is all politics. My point is that Iran doesn't need to do anything.
Any attack by Israel upon Iran could bring a conventional and or nuclear retaliation from Russia and/or China, either of which could economically and/or physically wipe out Israel, and cause further havoc to any of Israel's allies should they be stupid enough to get involved, including us. China already has massive economic clout with respect to the USA, and Russia is literally on Iran's doorstep. Iran and the USA/Israel know this. Iran also wants to become a member of the SCO (as does Pakistan).
All this bellicose behaviour will facilitate that.

I keep remembering Mel Gibson's drunken outburst. in vino veritas? We've been lured into this nonsense in the past (Poland 1939, Iraq more recently) and I fear it's all happening again, with us (and most US citizens) naive foot-soldiers once again.

To be clear, Iran doesn't need a nuclear bomb, as it has very powerful friends on the UNSC who have plenty. Reports from the IAEA which monitors them is that it's enriching uranium to reactor grade (3%) not weapons grade (90%), which Iran says is legally entitled to do under the NPT. What are relevant here are UN Security Council Resolutions and Note, because the resolution is under Article 41 of Chapter 7 of the United Nations Charter, it cannot be enforced through the use of military means Note how effectively tries to change the conditions of the NPT after the fact?

One has to ask why the IAEA is not inspecting Israel, Pakistan or India - that's because they unlike Iran have not signed the NPT! This is why this is victimization of Iran is considered diplomatically unfair/unjust. The NPT is voluntary!

as you say technically. But for some reason it doesn't apply to the idf. Despite hundreds of uk citizens going for idf training and fighting and being wounded how many have been prosecuted?

..British Member of House of Lords, Lord Ahmed asked a question in the upper house of the parliament on 26th January 2009,Whether any British citizens are serving in the Israeli Defence Force or the Israeli Defence Reserves?

In response to that Lord Malloch Brown, Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office responded, other than press reports, the UK Government do not possess information about whom the Israeli Government have called up to serve in the Israel Defence Forces or the Israeli Defence Reserves, including any dual nationals. Only the Israeli Government would have this information.....

In a later interview when asked about the reaction he got to his question ....Lord Ahmed: Well the reaction was very obvious. One of their lordships got up and started to praise the British citizens who were fighting in Gaza. He said: shouldn't we be proud of the fact they are fighting against terrorists who are hell bent on trying to destroy Israel....

There is also misinformation. an israeli military board moderator tell uk citizens thinking about joining the idf

...The UK as a whole recognizes dual citizenship. So you end up with two passports. There is no law on the books that would call for arresting someone from the UK for serving in the IDF. There are also numerous groups in the UK who can guide you about this...

yes in theory. Lord Ahmed raised the point in parliament and the Govt [Malloch Brown] said it didn't keep records. Only Israel would know that...
Apparently it is beyond the wit of HMG to ask the Israeli Govt for a list and to then keep the uk updated of any other uk citizens joining up and then prosecute? why don't they keep records?

On Israel Military net on a thread called 'Thinking of Joining IDF - Questions' one hopeful is told 'There is no law on the books that would call for arresting someone from the UK for serving in the IDF.There are also numerous groups in the UK who can guide you about this.'

Why would they say that? What are these uk based groups? Are they inciting British Citizens to breaking uk law? They also go on to link to a site specifically designed to help people join up.

I read/heard somewhere recently (approx 3/4 months ago) that Iran was pushing the boundaries in Uranium enrichment (can't remember where though, may have been on NN).
The 90% requirement for weapons grade Uranium enrichment slightly underestimates the issue.
I my memory serves, the report stated that Iran had recently reached the important/significant milestone of 25% enrichment. The tipping point, I believe, is somewhere around the 40% mark...afterwhich it's very easy, in production terms, to get to the 90% threshold.

Ken Loach likes dysfunctional poor people, but not dysfunctional rich people. he's made his fame and fortune out of this interest. He is of course an ideological Trotskyite, not a statist. He is also somewhat prejudiced about how and why people are the way they are.

For example, he seems to think, like so many Trots, that other people have privilege because they inherit it. But he does not seem to have understood that what people inherit are genes which express as their behaviours. He doesn't seem to have grasped that people have no choice in this matter either. Fairness is largely about coming to recognise this and manage it. I watch his films to see the workings of a deluded man's 'mind'.

    Ken says:

"I would like to ask those colleagues who have knelt before the Queen at some point in their lives: really, what are you doing?

"You don't want to be in there with the fraudsters, the tricksters and the knaves.

"And the woman you are kneeling before represents most of what is wrong with this country - inherited privilege and inherited wealth. Let's have a bit more dignity than crawling before that woman, please."

Mistress76uk - If you are going to learn one thing here, learn that Trots are self-serving anarchists, and that their fundamental error is to ignore or worse, abuse the complex fact that people are largely as they are not by choice, but by genetics.

It's certainly a difficult topic. As I keep saying, all I'm really interested in is fairness and I've strongly urged you to look into Rawls and his Political Liberalism on the issue of 'the good' as this practically underlies liberal-democracies' legislation on this matter.

All else is academic. The rule of law is all that matters on these matters. I think you have done us a service by raising t his issue once again, and I hope you will take my advice regarding looking into Rawls (and Dreben's influence). Pursuit of truth using logic is what matters, and that requires fairness and attention to difficult details. I fear we are being manipulated by friends of Israel, and I'm not at all sure that that is in our collective interest. Having said that, Israel is our ally but being someone's friend means not letting them do things which are not in their greater interest. Israel is an infantile/adolescent state.

As you know for me justice as 'fairness' is bonkers . Fairness demands human sacrifice. One gets the sense Rawls, if he was immortal, would be changing his theory every 10 years. His work seeded with phrases like the 'worst-off' and 'inequality' has the whiff of crypto communism.

I would encourage people to look Good up in the dictionary/thesaurus and write out all the words they find. Then those things that have more of those words are closer to the Good. So all things can be ranked. It is then rational to choose that which has the most good unless that choice is limited by necessity. It does not mean Good is the easiest.

This sort of philosophy is done by people naturally which is why, for example, migrants come to the uk. They probably had no training in philosophy [none necessasry] to understand where the Good is but somehow they managed to rank the countries in their own mind and choose that which in their view had the most good.

Thus the good is the highest and simplest and easily comprehendable philosophy that can become as complex as one has a personal taste for.

there can never be any major confusion over what the good is because anyone can go to the dictionary/thesaurus and examine any topic in the light of those words listed under good and then find out which has more and which less and if they are guided by reason choose the better. But passions [that take something else as the highest idea eg. family, tribe] crowd out reason which is why we can make choices knowing they are not good. So the task for the philospher is to purify themselves from false beliefs or the idols of the mind that seek to usurp the good from its rightful place.
