As in Turkey still, the Army in Egypt are held in respect due to their historical role in achieving independence for the country.

Unlike here in UK, the officer class, as in Turkey, is intelligent, well informed and conscious of the position they hold both as a legacy of history and as a respected body in the country.

They, unlike Mubarak, are no-one's stooges; don't be surprised if they are writing the Deputy President's scripts for him.

They will strike a balance between the growing demand for less high handedness from Government and the preservation of fundamental order in the society.

An Iraq style descent into tribal/sectarian anarchy is not about to happen; for one thing, the Egptians are more advanced societally and politically than the Iraqis; secondly, Bush and Blair are not in power, waving Crusader banners as they trample over the Middle East.

It`s my thesis that the Beeb are actively making the news over there in Egypt.

Obama = the new Jimmy Carter

Egypt is not predominantly sh'ia, Iran is.

Egypt has no tempting natural resources; Iran has.

The CIA/MI5 did not manufacture a "Shah" to replace a democratic republic in Egypt; they did in Iran, one of the main reasons why both US and UK are deeply mistrusted in Iran today.

The commonality is that Israel will press US to act in Israel's interest.

With this US administration, however, that will not be as simple as previously.

The Israeli state clearly wants Mubarak to remain in office and keep the country "under control", while Obama and H.Clinton realise change must now happen.

How it happens will be interesting.

IT is quite sad though, the lack of depth, knowledge or insight many in this country have of the Middle East; perhaps it's the colonial legacy, but I don't find the same ignorance of the region's issues in France, or indeed, in Germany, where there is only wartime theatre history.


One of my friends, Rainer the Spread Better, puts it down to the British hesitancy to learn languages, relying on foreigners to speak English to them.

This is exemplified in the articulate fluency in English demonstrated by Israeli Government spokespeople, compared to their counterparts in Egypt,Palestine,Syria etc.

Rainer's argument goes that because the British can understand the Israeli spokesperson, they are more inclined to listen to the arguments, whereas with an Arab's stilted English, they are inclined to lose patience quickly and "Johnny Foreigner" syndrome kicks in.

We've all seen this on NN, when Jazza, for example, speaks slower and louder when he's faced with a lack of fluency in English from an interviewee, whereas others try desperately to shut them up.

WJ, if you are serious about 'educating the world' either.

a) Invent a new religion (better have a few really good miracles up your sleeve though and expect to die horribly ... increasingly difficult to pull off in the age of the www).

b) Eradicate all religions (can get a bit messy).. then start again.

the Amazon Forest: to reply to the highly biased report, carbon is irrelevant - the change in climate we are *causing* is killing parts of the Amazon, this is a horrendous loss of biodiversity, of an integral and ESSENTIAL part of the global biosphere. green - lovely vision of what the Big Society could be - they need funding though. What you *could* do in that direction, is to mandate citizen bodies to sit on these now quangos, and both report back and discuss people issues on them. In other words, don't dismantle the current systems, just bring the Public in on them. The 'Big Society' will develop from normal people gaining experience, and enjoying taking part. There is absolutely NO need, and certainly no *justification* possible to explain why you feel these institutions should be moved from unaccountable State run services, to unaccountable Private *FOR-PROFIT* run services.

adding your largely unnecessary cuts to the mix, and you will drive many of what are now Public services bankrupt, so the private sector will purchase them dirt cheap - and then charge the Govt far more for the same services to us, whilst running down the services maximising their short-term profits.

yeah on "Big Society" and citizen-involvement, but a big NO to the catch that privatises to Corporates, because, Mr Green, you have to admit, Corporates do not have a good record in Citizen-involvement, do they?

How dare you suggest I was watching QT !

I may have inadvertently surfed over it, noted (as usual) that there was no-one of interest there, just a bunch of intellectual but 'needy' types.

I did watch it when they used to include a comedian on the panel to bring a bit of realism to proceeding - that 'Ed Balls' character (great name) being the most amusing,and then I moved on..but thats it..honest.

As for gospels, i dont do gospels, but, as you may be catching on, i like, as a 17th century chemist, to mix various ingredients together to 'see what happens' in a social / geopolitical experimental sense within the test tube of the NN blogs.

We are, after all, very knowlegable as a species about just about everything in our environment, except ourselves.

I am getting worried about John Simpson, he is introduced by George Alagia as 'our world affairs editor' what soes that exactly mean? How do you become 'world affairs editor'? Isn't it the guy on the ground? The Australian floods, they get the same guy in to do a pretty good job and he is obviously based in Australia so they use him. John Simpson cannot be everywhere and don't forget there is a lot of 'ego' about when you refer to 'world affairs' but to call someone almost God and other reporters fall prostrate in homage is taking things a tad too far. If you bowed to Jeremy and called him 'world affairs editor' you would be in for a slap.....
