Apparently science has now been re-written and Oxygen is now generated by plants due to simply splitting the Hydrogen from water. I am afraid that the women who were at the studio did not garner any respect or empathy.
There are those who go for private enhancement for severe psychological problems who deserve empathy. However there are many who choose surgery for enhancement with clinically minor psychological problems, and my question is why should the tax payer pay for:
1. responsibility not taken by the private company,
2. responsibility not taken by the individual.
If you have problems with plastic surgery you need to deal with this yourself or in conjunction with your insurance company. Why should the National Health Service ( not the national enhancement service) deal with your wishes as opposed to what is potentially fatal, such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, organ failure, neurological disorders eg strokes, or debilitating diseases such as arthritis ( of whatever type) mental illness (of whatever type).
Because breast implants have sexual connotations, therefore emotive, why should they take precedence over something that is potentially far more fatal such as heart disease.
I am very sorry to say that your audience has done little for respect of women. This is not the fault of Newsnight, but of the women that spoke.

for goodness sake, the NHS didn't go round telling everyone that it was safe to get implants. The private clinics did and the women simply believed them without bothering to do their research. Let them pay for their own vanity. I had to pay for my own hip operation and if there are problems I accept that I will have to pay again. That's how it works. A very disappointing debate on breast implants. Sadly Jeremy Paxman handled it badly The women involved probably went away more angry and confused,no one appeared to have the right knowledge or information to share. It was a rabble. Cosmetic implants both for men and women need to be explored legally,medically,psychologically right now.

I kinda felt sorry for the minister for health. Although the author Naomi Wolf was correct in her assertion about the known dangers of breast implants, and how its been known for many years, the health minister hasn't been responsible for the powerful and often unregulated surgical cosmetic industry and how they operate. The minister was wearing a brown quartz necklace..but didn't protect her from picking up some unfair flak. (Some women wear cystals to protect themselves from negative energy...its an observation, I don't dabble myself) Getting the silicone implants removed and who pays for it is one thing..the damage already done is another story.

I could be wrong but I recall my school science days and I think silicone is highly toxic, plays havoc with the lymph system (twice as much liquid as blood contained therein)..something regular doctors ain't to clued up on at the best of times as medical school kinda skips that most important system in our bodies; the immune system. Its no wonder they throw toxic substances into women's bodies...if there's money to be made. Hasn't that always been the way. They once said thalidomide was safe..oh and smoking was good for you. There has been data available 鈥� stating that most of the generic high quality fit for purpose implants have a limited life and will 鈥榣eak鈥� or possibly rupture (fail) within a product lifetime of about 8 鈥� 12 years. doesn't matter who fitted them.

Newer models supposedly longer 鈥� but a bit like knee and hip replacements, depending on wear and tear they would be expected to wear out sooner than the patient they were transplanted into. Therefore need removing, replacing.

All surgery involves risk. None is 1005 guaranteed for life or even for the immediate recovery. All procedures have certain 鈥榝ailure鈥� rates and it us up to surgeon and patient to discuss and decide what is worth it when there are choices.

I can understand that in many of the cheaper clinics this may not have been easy to do - but it wasn't in the NHS either when I underwent major essential surgery (unrelated) recently. It took me months of research, consideration and weighing up the facts and data and advice the NHS didn't have funds to provide before deciding. And most of my aftercare advice has come from the internet, good books and support charities. Because the NHS is cash strapped.

Oh yes 鈥� and I would support our government minister taking out a law suit for slander against Ms wolf. At the very least a public apology.

When diagnosed with Parkinson's I researched, researched and researched.

I checked various sources, and silicone is non-toxic in ordinary use, but embedding foreign matter in your body isn't ordinary use, is it? That's why some of the ladies were taking anti-rejection drugs.

The main cause of rupture and leakage in this case is not due to the dangers of breast implant surgery in general, but the fact that PIP was manufacturing these implants using industrial grade silicone when they should have used medical grade. I agree with Naomi Wolf that cosmetic surgery industry should be better regulated. However we are talking about a government agency set up by a bunch of bureaucrats here; so they reacted only after a disaster had happened and did nothing prior to prevent it, what else is new?! My question is why we seem to be living in such a crooked world whereby the CEO of a medical equipments manufacturer, who is not poor by any measure, felt comfortable with making a quick buck at the expense of the innocent lives of tens of thousands of women. I say refuse him parole and bring back the rope.

If those women in the NN studio are experiencing symptoms/side effects of the faulty implants, they should be treated by the NHS - I don鈥檛 think it is right to punish people for having vanity by refusing them treatments, especially if their conditions can be life threatening.

I expect that right now there are Syrian soldiers around Homs who have the same fire in their eyes as a Japanese soldier in Nanking circa 1937 or a German soldier in the Ukraine around 1942, as they committed unspeakable massacres of innocents.

I always thought (not a statement of fact) insurance policies cover a time-period of activity of the policy holder, not a time-period limit when someone else can make a claim against the policy holder.
So why would a clinic closing down stop someone from making a claim against a 鈥渘ow defunct鈥� clinics insurance policy ?

I would also question to what extent the British regulator could have done anything , as it is my understanding that the CE mark was issued in France and therefore freely marketable throughout the Single Market.

I would seek proper legal advice for the possibility of taking action here in the UK and in France.

But hay, that's just my unprofessional opinion on the matter.
