Verity Murphy | 15:01 UK time, Tuesday, 7 February 2012

Tonight, as the Syrian army assault on Homs continues we ask what talks between President Bashar al-Assad and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Damascus will have achieved.

And what will be the effect of six Gulf Arab states saying they are expelling Syrian ambassadors in their countries and recalling their envoys from Syria?

Also, on the day that the Commons Health Committee has been hearing evidence on the PIP breast implants case we take an in-depth look at the story.

We have a report from our Science editor Susan Watts asking who has let the women who have been given faulty implants down and whose responsibility it is to remedy the situation.

Plus in the studio Jeremy Paxman will be joined by Health Minister Anne Milton, former glamour model Katie Price, feminist author Naomi Wolf and a dozen women who have had breast implants to discuss this issue and the wider question of why women have breast enhancement surgery in the first place.

Commodity speculators Glencore is entering into a $90 bn merger with mining group Xstrata, the component of which is said to be $39 bn their profits for 2011 were up 20% to $5.8 bn. They are not exactly making a fortune, but perhaps the merger is to hide the chance that Glencore can't afford to pay for their Xstrata contracts. Similarly with Xstrata ( who get a 45% stake in the merged company ), if Glencore ( who only made $4 bn on $144 bn turnover 2011) can't pay them they are just as bust as each other and therefore its probably convenient to hide the black hole in both their balance sheets by merging. Perhaps the same basic principle applied in the merger between British Airways and Iberia, but for trans Atlantic competition concerns BA was once on track to merge with American Airlines, which has since filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the US ?

'We have a report from our Science editor Susan Watts asking who has let the women who have been given faulty implants down and whose responsibility it is to remedy the situation.'

From what I have read so far, it would be more the province of a legal expert, as it would seem the implants were not faulty, but created from inferior grade silicone fraudulently by the manufacturer. Ditto responsibility.

'to discuss this issue and the wider question of why women have breast enhancement surgery in the first place.'

Thanks heavens you chose the word 'wider' over any other. That would have been a step too far. Though the lure of Ms. Price suggests the ratings priority in heat over light are still running true to form on why some women opt for augmentation across a variety of possible reasons. And of those some can't wait for a call from a TV station to 'share their stories'. Any in there disappointed to be cut from the vajazzle special'?

Informative and educational to many of a quieter, less telephilic disposition will, I'd hazard, be a stretch for this collection.

    Nice one, Newsynightie. Nice one.

At last, a partly scientific topic upon which we're all qualified to express an opinion - breast "enhancement".

I've always felt that "some is good" doesn't imply that "more is better". And if there's anything more grotesque than oversized artificial mammaries, it's that the state has to pick up the tab when things it goes wrong. Who do these people think they are - bankers?

BRITAIN HAS FORM REGARDING COVERT REGIME CHANGES IN SYRIA

    Macmillan backed Syria assassination plot
Documents show White House and No 10 conspired over oil-fuelled invasion plan

Nearly 50 years before the war in Iraq, Britain and America sought a secretive "regime change" in another Arab country they accused of spreading terror and threatening the west's oil supplies, by planning the invasion of Syria and the assassination of leading figures.
Newly discovered documents show how in 1957 Harold Macmillan and President Dwight Eisenhower approved a CIA-MI6 plan to stage fake border incidents as an excuse for an invasion by Syria's pro-western neighbours, and then to "eliminate" the most influential triumvirate in Damascus.

I can't actually grasp how intellectually dishonest the latest 麻豆官网首页入口 alleged science programmes have become, half an hour into a programme on the evolution of plants and how they changed the earth yet not one single mention of CO2. Apparently science has now been re-written and Oxygen is now generated by plants due to simply splitting the Hydrogen from water. No mention of what happens to the hydrogen, presumably its goes into the atmosphere like the Oxygen, when anyone with a half decent grasp of basic biology knows full well that the hydrogen combines with the Carbon from CO2 to form the plant matter itself. 35 minutes in and we eventually we get a short snap of the truth about CO2 but no reference to it being essential to the photo synthesis and all plant life. At least Iain Stewart did not refer to CO2 as a toxic gas as part of the make up of our primeval atmosphere, and it would appear that even green zealots like Richard Black are starting to ease themselves off their almost religious addiction to the CO2 Climate Change Scam.

I can answer why women have breast implants. They know men like big breasts...that and vanity.

I feel really sorry for the lady who had PIP implants which have ruptured and the liquid seeped into her lymph nodes :(

  • Comment number 19.

Sorry, but it was my understanding that these PIP implants were bought by various clinics because they cost less than 10% of the regular price. Surely the clinics should have had alarm bells ringing? Why did they fail to test them properly? Worse still are those who have had implants and the clinics they went to have wound up? Even more shocking the 26 year old who is undergoing the menopause :(

  • Comment number 20.

I am appauled that Wales offers FREE implant removal and FREE replacements, whereas England does not. The Health Minister is a FAIL of the highest order, who cannot even give the victims an MRA scan, and no undertaking given at all.

  • Comment number 21.

The programme tonight is UNBELIEVABLE. Does Paxman really think all these women should be entitled to a 拢3,000 a pop MRI scan on the NHS? They found the money to have these ridiculous objects placed in their bodies so why should the taxpayer pick up the tab now its all gone wrong? I don't think the Minister looks very effective, but letting a bunch of shall we say not overly bright women ambush her on their individual needs is absolutely ridiculous.

International commodities trader Marc Rich was the founder of Glencore (very 'Rich' apparently!).

'Marc Rich (born December 18, 1934) is an international commodities trader. He was indicted in the United States on federal charges of illegally making oil deals with Iran during the late 1970s-early 1980s Iran hostage crisis and tax evasion. He was in Switzerland at the time of the indictment and has never returned to the U.S.
He subsequently received a presidential pardon from U.S. President Bill Clinton on January 20, 2001, Clinton's last day in office.'

The current CEO of Glencore is Ivan Glasenberg

    A very kosher company indeed.

I am livid with the Wolf woman.
(and strangely supportive of much of what Katie Price has said)

Feeding the frenzy by attacking the government for failing to inform women of the dangers of silicone when implanted into the body.

So, what of the warnings that women have had about tobacco and alcohol - all 'alien' to the natural body and capable of immeasurable and untold damage?

The usual response to that is that few take any notice, heads in the sand, carry on doing what they want - and tell the government to butt out and stop treating the GBP like children.

    Lose lose situation.

  • Comment number 28.

  • Comment number 29.

Presume Mistress 76UK you are somehow connected with this implant mess. In which case it would be good to get your terminology right. It is an MRI scan not an MRA. Actually, what most of these women need is a brain scan. Note the number of clinics used that have gone into liquidation - think that indicates that a lot of these were done on the cheap. They weren't so worried then, were they? Suggest they all find the money to pay to finish the job they started.

@ Brighty #27 - but the problem is that women were told the implants were SAFE. They had not been told that there was a 70% rupture rate with silicon implants, whereas with alcohol/tobacco we are all bombarded with the health risks.

  • Comment number 32.

The Wolf woman was grossly irresponsible and exploiting those women. Leading them to believe that their vanity was somehow all the government's fault. And this is the same Naomi Wolf who would scream like a banshee if that same government tried to interfere in women's lives. I am so mad I have emailed to tell her what a prat she made of herself. Probably, like all Americans, she despises the NHS and so would like to see it saddled with all the millions of pounds it is going to cost to sort this mess out.

And nobody picked up on the fact that so many women are asking who is going to put new implants in after removal. They just don't get it, do they.

    PIP breast implants.
I am afraid that the women who were at the studio did not garner any respect or empathy.
There are those who go for private enhancement for severe psychological problems who deserve empathy. However there are many who choose surgery for enhancement with clinically minor psychological problems, and my question is why should the tax payer pay for:
    1. responsibility not taken by the private company,
    2. responsibility not taken by the individual.
If you have problems with plastic surgery you need to deal with this yourself or in conjunction with your insurance company. Why should the National Health Service ( not the national enhancement service) deal with your wishes as opposed to what is potentially fatal, such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, organ failure, neurological disorders eg strokes, or debilitating diseases such as arthritis ( of whatever type) mental illness (of whatever type).
Because breast implants have sexual connotations, therefore emotive, why should they take precedence over something that is potentially far more fatal such as heart disease.
I am very sorry to say that your audience has done little for respect of women. This is not the fault of Newsnight, but of the women that spoke.

  • Comment number 35.

for goodness sake, the NHS didn't go round telling everyone that it was safe to get implants. The private clinics did and the women simply believed them without bothering to do their research. Let them pay for their own vanity. I had to pay for my own hip operation and if there are problems I accept that I will have to pay again. That's how it works. And Naomi Wolf leading them to believe that somehow it was all the government's fault was beyond dishonest.

  • Comment number 36.

@ Teddy #29 - Sorry, MRI not MRA. Actually, Transform UK were using PIP implants until 2005, and The Harley Medical Group carried out 13,900 PIP breast implants from Sept 2001-March 2010. Not exactly "shoddy" or "backstreet" clinics.

A very disappointing debate on breast implants. Sadly Jeremy Paxman handled it badly The women involved probably went away more angry and confused,no one appeared to have the right knowledge or information to share. It was a rabble. Cosmetic implants both for men and women need to be explored legally, medically, psychologically right now.

  • Comment number 40.

I kinda felt sorry for the minister for health. Although the author Naomi Wolf was correct in her assertion about the known dangers of breast implants, and how its been known for many years, the health minister hasn't been responsible for the powerful and often unregulated surgical cosmetic industry and how they operate. The minister was wearing a brown quartz necklace..but didn't protect her from picking up some unfair flak. (Some women wear cystals to protect themselves from negative energy...its an observation, I don't dabble myself) Getting the silicone implants removed and who pays for it is one thing..the damage already done is another story.

Most of those women in the newsnight studio tonight represent many women who have been a cash cow for many years for those nice men in white coats holding a scalpel ..and keys to a Merc. kerching拢$.
Very sad to see this thing unfold, especially for women who went under the knife for the often performed but mostly unnesessary removal of breast tissue.

I could be wrong but I recall my school science days and I think silicone is highly toxic, plays havoc with the lymph system (twice as much liquid as blood contained therein)..something regular doctors ain't to clued up on at the best of times as medical school kinda skips that most important system in our bodies; the immune system. Its no wonder they throw toxic substances into women's bodies...if there's money to be made. Hasn't that always been the way. They once said thalidomide was safe..oh and smoking was good for you. The food industry said aspartame -the sweetener - was safe but is highly toxic, and even after many warnings from the medical establisment that it crossed the brain barrier and caused neurological disorders -somehow enough money was thrown up the stairs to get it approved for use.. and today that stuff is still in your diet drinks and nearly everything else that is suger free and "good for yer", theres not a chewing gum on the market that hasn't got it, yeah, there still poisoning us for sure. Diet drinks..chewing gum...breast implants, its all about the money. Its never about you really is it.

There has been data available 鈥 stating that most of the generic high quality fit for purpose implants have a limited life and will 鈥榣eak鈥 or possibly rupture (fail) within a product lifetime of about 8 鈥 12 years. doesn't matter who fitted them.

Newer models supposedly longer 鈥 but a bit like knee and hip replacements, depending on wear and tear they would be expected to wear out sooner than the patient they were transplanted into. Therefore need removing, replacing.

All surgery involves risk. None is 1005 guaranteed for life or even for the immediate recovery. All procedures have certain 鈥榝ailure鈥 rates and it us up to surgeon and patient to discuss and decide what is worth it when there are choices.

I can understand that in many of the cheaper clinics this may not have been easy to do - but it wasn't in the NHS either when I underwent major essential surgery (unrelated) recently. It took me months of research, consideration and weighing up the facts and data and advice the NHS didn't have funds to provide before deciding. And most of my aftercare advice has come from the internet, good books and support charities. Because the NHS is cash strapped.

Oh yes 鈥 and I would support our government minister taking out a law suit for slander against Ms wolf. At the very least a public apology.

Do we not have responsibility for our own decisions? Not much in the way of funds to improve the lives of people with illnesses that effect daily living let alone looking more attractive.

Kate Price: "I wanted....", "I wanted....", "I wanted....", "I wanted....", "I wanted...." Unfortunately, some women have had these implants because they see her as a role-model.

But Naomi Wolf gave me the impression of crocodile tears: I felt that self promotion was her real agenda.

If there were a safe implant, I wouldn't begrudge it on the NHS to, say, people like breast cancer victims, but if it's a self-image problem then in most cases surely psychotherapy would be more appropriate? In most cases it was vanity, like the lady who'd had two children (not the one with the hysterectomy, the other one) and wanted to look as though she hadn't had any. She said "we've only just finished paying it off". Most families have different priorities for their money.

I agree with Chanel, and teddyandgypsy @35. Mind you, the minister was briefed by her department to speak with forked tongue also: "no evidence......."? Ellipsoids!

Mistress @36 "Not exactly "shoddy" or "backstreet" clinics."

Perhaps so, but despite the saying, you don't always get what think you are paying for. A good conman does better from a posh office!

Kevsey had it right in his overall very considered and thoughtful comment too, especially this: "Most of those women in the newsnight studio tonight represent many women who have been a cash cow for many years for those nice men in white coats holding a scalpel ..and keys to a Merc. kerching拢$."

I checked various sources, and silicone is non-toxic in ordinary use, but embedding foreign matter in your body isn't ordinary use, is it? That's why some of the ladies were taking anti-rejection drugs.

A further thought for you Mistress: you might not get the best in Harley St, only the greediest. About 15 years ago, there was a big splash in the local paper about a local dentist who'd come within a hairsbreadth of being struck off for "doing unnecessary treatment": basically a way of defrauding the NHS. He now has a clinic in Harley St, and has even appeared in TV adverts.

Changing the subject entirely, a friend whose son is an NCO in the army tells me they already have contingency plans for rapid deployment of troops to Syria. They were to go on standby if the UN vote had gone the other way.

The main cause of rupture and leakage in this case is not due to the dangers of breast implant surgery in general, but the fact that PIP was manufacturing these implants using industrial grade silicone when they should have used medical grade. I agree with Naomi Wolf that cosmetic surgery industry should be better regulated. However we are talking about a government agency set up by a bunch of bureaucrats here; so they reacted only after a disaster had happened and did nothing prior to prevent it, what else is new?! My question is why we seem to be living in such a crooked world whereby the CEO of a medical equipments manufacturer, who is not poor by any measure, felt comfortable with making a quick buck at the expense of the innocent lives of tens of thousands of women. I say refuse him parole and bring back the rope.

If those women in the NN studio are experiencing symptoms/side effects of the faulty implants, they should be treated by the NHS - I don鈥檛 think it is right to punish people for having vanity by refusing them treatments, especially if their conditions can be life threatening.

The two guests David Owen and Rory Stewart effectively predicted a chilling short-term outcome for the Syrian people, anmely that many, many more of them will die before the situation changes.

One must suppose that at some point, the ICC will issue an indictment for Bashar Assad, which will move things along a bit.

Russia, meaning Putin, looks at Syria and worries - could a democratic uprising happen here too one day, hence the veto.

I expect that right now there are Syrian soldiers around Homs who have the same fire in their eyes as a Japanese soldier in Nanking circa 1937 or a German soldier in the Ukraine around 1942, as they committed unspeakable massacres of innocents.

We are humans with a savage capability lurking just beneath the surface that just needs the right conditions for it to come to the fore.

    Implants

Not sure I learnt anything new.

I always thought (not a statement of fact) insurance policies cover a time-period of activity of the policy holder, not a time-period limit when someone else can make a claim against the policy holder.
So why would a clinic closing down stop someone from making a claim against a 鈥渘ow defunct鈥 clinics insurance policy ?

I would also question to what extent the British regulator could have done anything , as it is my understanding that the CE mark was issued in France and therefore freely marketable throughout the Single Market.

I would seek proper legal advice for the possibility of taking action here in the UK and in France.

But hay, that's just my unprofessional opinion on the matter.

    Syria

I don't think we should write off the Arabs League efforts.

How is Assad's crack down playing on the wider Arab streets ?

Lack of light can have this result. Bet you warmed your hands off the screen mind.

But hay, that's just my unprofessional opinion on the matter.

And these (too) often are the true value of these threads. You find out more. The irony is, for free, where the other stuff carries a massive cost to inspire it.
