The Coventry University exhibitions run from 7-18 June 2002 and display innovative work from a variety of courses.

Degree shows are a great way to spot talent, buy some original work and keep your ear to the ground for new trends. They are a brilliant celebration of local talent, effort and education.

Art student draws on her dyslexia for inspiration

Art and Craft student Emily Davies will exhibit a range of minimal but decorative textiles which attempt to depict the emotion and frustration she felt suffering from dyslexia as a school child.

Emily said:

"My final year project is based on my own experience of school; the emotions caused by the frustrations of having dyslexia and the feelings towards myself, my teachers and my fellow classmates.

"Using my school reports, exercise books, and most importantly, teachers' comments as inspiration, I aim to depict emotion through typography and the language of books."

When she has completed her degree Emily is planning to do a postgraduate diploma at Goldsmith's University of London. Emily's ambition is to become a community artist so she can share her enjoyment of textiles with others.

Student talent is no flash in the pan

Look out for the state-of-the-art toilet designed by Consumer Product Design student, Ian Reynolds.

The idea to design the toilet was the result of a brief provided by the Royal Society of Arts. Ian's design is more slender than a normal sculptured toilet, is much easier to keep clean and has unique comfort features.

The toilet can be used by both men and women, however, the seat has been recessed into the bowl, so it can be lifted to transform into a urinal. The toilet hangs off the wall and stands at 5' 6" high. It's unlike anything you'll have seen before!

Student's project completed in the bar!

Final-year Industrial Product Design student, Paul Walton, has designed an innovative drinks vending machine which eliminates the need to queue at the bar for drinks.

Paul's design is a revolutionary self-service machine because it delivers two types of spirit and four different mixers. Customers use a pre-charged card to operate the machine, which delivers the drinks quickly and simply.

Paul intends the design to be used for promotional nights and to increase sales while reducing time spent queuing at the bar. Paul said:

"It takes a fresh new approach to the normal boxy look of existing vending machines, and sets the trend for things to come."
