Use sentence structures from the language you're learning
After several years of learning German at school I have come to love reading and listening to German materials. Lately I have found myself, to an extent, using German sentence structures even when speaking English - although I must restrict it to when I am talking to myself, as others only raise their eyebrows! I find this does help as practice, as when I come to speaking German I do not have to focus so much on the order, and can pay more attention to word endings, verb forms, vocab etc.

This is also helpful because you sound less awkward when you use sentence structures already in the language. It helps you talk more like how native speakers would talk.
I wondered about this technique. I think it is a very good idea. Thanks for confirming it.
I agree that trying to write something by thinking is really helpful to improve the language you are learning, sometimes I'm writing sentence structures which I read on a text, magazine etc. It's really helpful. Though it's the best way to try to write something yourself.
