The South Down Society of Modern Art

The South Down Society of Modern Art was formed in March 1927 by seven local artists. The notion was to encourage an appreciation of the developments in painting and sculpture that were happening in Paris and across Europe. Artist Sabrina MacMahon knows the story very well, she鈥檒l be on the show to tell us more about the society.聽聽

The South Down Society of Modern Art Exhibtion opens next Thursday and Friday evenings in Belfast at Queen Street studios and Belfast Exposed.

Tullyhogue Fort was the ceremonial seat of The Kings in Tyrone for centuries. About two miles out of Cookstown, it鈥檚 been a place that鈥檚 always fascinated archaeologists. Chieftans were crowned here and warriors feted. Deirdre Donnelly visited a dig there to see what other mysteries could be unearthed in this mythical place.

This week the Giant鈥檚 Causeway was named 6th in the Top 20 Most Beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Sites. 250 years ago a family from Carrickfergus in County Antrim emigrated to America. Little did they know then that their son would become the 7th president of the United States. Anne Marie headed out to Boneybefore where she met local woman Joanie Wilson and Texan Ann Mayne , who have just been given an award for their work telling the Andrew Jackson story.

The Andrew Jackson Cottage is open on Fridays and Saturdays between 11am and 3pm or by arrangement.

The Banbridge Community Orchestra

The Banbridge Community Orchestra was set up by Bulgarian couple Veselka and Nikolay Ivanov after they moved here four years ago, and now they鈥檙e filling the town with all kinds of music from Ulster Scots and uilleann piping to Eastern European music to Classical. Veselka is on the show to tell us more along with local violinist Kim Scott from the Orchestra聽

Banbridge Community Chamber Orchestra Sessions and Discussions start next Monday January 12th at 7.30pm and continue weekly.

Sing In A Day

Next Saturday hundreds of people from the triangle area will be singing their hearts out all day and all night. We鈥檒l be talking to conductor and music teacher Peter Wilson as he warms up his vocal chords for Sing In A Day聽聽
