The right way

The rivers and streams of the New Zealand alps may appear devoid of food, but there are many succulent insect larvae and other creatures available to eat. Water, whether salty or fresh, is a rich resource and, of all land animals, birds have developed the widest range of techniques and tools to take advantage of that food supply. The wrybill is the only bird with a beak that bends to one side. It only lives in New Zealand and uses its beak to probe under heavy rocks that are too big to shift. The bend in the beak is always to the right.
