The importance of history to the Asante
Gus Casely-Hayford visits the birthplace of Osei Tutu, the founder of the Asante Kingdom. Not much lasts in the heat and humidity of the forest, which is why stories of the past are so embedded in Asante culture. The local chief underlines this when he tells Gus that history can be modified to suit the present - something the earliest rulers of Asante understood well.
