Bishop Grantly is a gentle and kind old man. The very opposite to his son the Archdeacon, he favours an idle life of gentle conversation accompanied by a leisurely glass of sherry. He and Mr Harding are very old friends who love each other warmly and have no better pleasure in life than fondly discussing the episcopal ostentation and ambitions of his son.
