Injured in an accident, Madeline has reluctantly returned to Barchester when her absentee clergyman father, Dr Stanhope, is recalled from Italy (where he鈥檚 been butterfly collecting for 12 years). She has left behind the dubious Signor Neroni (apparently the last of the Neros) and brought her small daughter with her. Madeline has to be carried about Barchester on a sofa and is a dangerous combination of flirtatious, amoral and bored. Mrs Baxter wonders if she has a heart.
