Will Stubbins
Stubbins volunteers to help as a blacksmith. He only knows how to make nails, but will learn as he goes along, with hope and enthusiasm. He desperately wants to get home to his wife and children. He thinks his wife is faithfully waiting for him, because Letters Molloy invented a different version of the letter that he read to him. Stubbins wants to learn to read and write so that he will be able to write to his wife and read the letter that he treasures.
