Age, gender, culture and social situation will all contribute to body language. In real life, reading body language is an important part of understanding the full significance of a conversation.

A firm handshake means you wish to appear confident, even if it鈥檚 an act. If you lean forward as you listen to a conversation, it makes it apparent that you are interested in the other person and wish to engage with them. The teenager who slouches in their chair as the teacher tells them off is making it quite clear that they don鈥檛 want to listen.

It鈥檚 possible to fake these signals. You may be terrified as you go into an interview for a job but you can probably produce a firm handshake to make yourself seem confident and convincing. The is that in performance, you are faking every word and every gesture as you create a role, but everything you do needs to appear genuine.
