What do plants give us?
Description
A look at the range of useful foods and materials we get from plants, such as wicker for baskets, wheat for bread, and oil made from nuts and seeds. Even the rubber in a pair of rubber gloves comes from a tree. The presenter walks around a supermarket discovering the useful foodstuffs and materials, including the three items we get from a coconut.
Classroom Ideas
Before watching the clip, ask children what they think we can get from plants and note these down. After the clip has played it could provide a stimulus for discussion about what other things we get from plants other than food. This could lead to a sorting activity where children sort items into things we get from plants and things we don鈥檛. The items could be pictures or physical things and range from food to baskets, paper or things like rubber and cotton.
