More detail on tonight's programme:

Tonight Richard Watson will bring us more on the extraordinary story of Mark Kennedy, the undercover police officer who spent seven years posing as a climate activist.

In the studio we'll be asking about the lines of control in undercover police investigations and how such operations are regulated.

In 2000 when fuel protesters took to the streets to complain about the high price of fuel, the average cost for a litre of unleaded petrol was 80p. At the start of this month the average of cost of a litre of unleaded was £1.24.

David Grossman will report on what lies behind the rising cost and whether the government is likely to ease motorists' misery in the months ahead or add to it.

Plus, this week there has been a jump in the number of flu deaths. According to Health Protection Agency figures released today the virus killed 62 people, bringing the total number of deaths to 112 since October. Susan Watts will be talking us through the figures and what they signify.

And Michael Crick will be at the count in Oldham East and Saddleworth, where constituents have been voting in the first by-election of this parliament.

    global inflation in commodities.

people say nothing can be done about it. Yes it can.

    1. end speculation in food/energy commodities. People are dying because prices are being artificially raised for profit. In a zero sum game to make yourself rich you have to make others poor or even die.

2.increase storage capacity to ride out short term blips so the nation is not held hostage to profiteering

    3. end subsidy that allows millionaires to hoard land as unproductive parkland.

4.place a tax on unproductive land.

    5. make it illegal to hold ships of gas offshore till the prices rise.

there is lots that can be done.

1...But the problem with your idea is that it requires cordinated world government and an end to financial fascism/global capitalism.
Who has the power and the inclination to take the steps you list there?

#1 Good points JC, there is a lot that could be done, but won't.

One I can think of is birth control, why don't we offer that far more freely to people who can't afford it?

Everything wouldn't have to stretch so far then.

I heard the piece about food being a "commodity" for the rich to play ball with, no morals or ethos in this "global" world.

these measures could be done at national level.

it is the moral duty of leaders to safeguard their people [from bad philosophies such as hayekism]. failure to do so is an abuse of power.

there is no 'shortage of food. we waste millions of tons a year. vast tracts of the uk land is idle because they get a 4 billion a year public subsidy to be park keepers for the equestrian class.

before producers got subsidy because the price was low. now its high why are they still getting subsidy? do the tractors need gold plated wheels?

the uk is almost unique in not having a land tax.

as for cameron blabbing about preventing radicalism doesn't the RAND report say foreign troops in islamic lands is directly linked to domestic terrorism? so when is he going to end the pointless gesturism of uk troops in aghanistan? remember these are british people taking action against the uk state long before the 'students' began to be praised for it. we are spending billions a year in security against our own people. which is the condition of the tyrant.

whoever ends blairs wars and cleans out the neocons from HMG will 'end' terrorism.

Grass roots alleged environmentalists need to work out what planet they are on, their eco-fascist masters are working in the interest of the likes of Shell and BP who want to push Gas as the key fuel of the future. Perhaps that explains why Shell and BP were lined up supporting Brown to sign a deal on Carbon Trading at Copenhagen, likewise alleged grass roots environmentalists protesting against any moves towards energy from waste incinerators. Environmental protesters are a bunch of idiots fighting on the wrong side if they allege to be fighting in the interest of true freedom not the corporate slavery their eco-fascist masters promote.

Reading between the lines of the recent coverage of Kennedy etc its pretty clear that the corporates are also sponsoring individuals to infiltrate and fester violent climate activist action. As I said at the time when the first story about Kennedy broke, it would appear that the attacks on said power stations were government sponsored in order to make climate change policy look good, as if it was pandering to mass public opinion. Nothing could be further from the truth as most of the general public don't have the first idea about what's really going on in the news, and are totally unaware of the raft of energy price increases to pay for all the climate nonsense.

  • Comment number 12.

reading about those who think they have a 'right to take action about climate change' reminds me we have a whole brainwashed generation of kids who 'believe' all this stuff because their peers told them it was 'settled' and 'no doubt'.

Who were these preachers that sanctioned what in effect has a wing that is a now a terrorist movement? that now needs to be spied on?

Nice to see the Newsnight team is as concerned about law-breaking by 'Climate Change' nutters, as it is about the activities of the police.

    That's sarcasm, if you're unsure.

It's an inconvenient truth that the public, were they aware of the alternative point of view (let's cross our fingers for the correct 'Murdoch' ruling), would largely support the police, at the expense of the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú point of view.

I think it would help the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú in the long-run if more of the public questioned why they are resigned to paying the Licence Fee.

    Boris Yeltsin

    Read more:

Unfortunately he was wrong in terms of where the clouds of terror eventually came from. This was when a warped form of capitalism took over and the death rate among ordinary Russians went up.

To our shame, we did nothing to help

re Mr Ordes comments to Gavin Esler when he said the undercover officer did an important job in stopping the take over of the Power station.
Surely in terms of the time frame the undercover officer was infiltrated into the enviromental movement years before?

    MORE ON SPEECHES (#18)

Charlie Kennedy really is a charlie, it seems.

On Question Time, he trumpeted Obama's 'eloquence' in an address regarding the recent 'shooter' incident. Someone sould tell Charlie that Obama was reading words PUT IN HIS MOUTH (like: "Ask not what your country . . . etc"). When Obama stopped reading, he went right back to stumblebum mode - as always.

'DIFFICULT DECISIONS' (Nick's Old and Sad explanation)

Politicians seem to think that taking DIFFICULT decisions is a mark of excellence. In view of the fact that Westminster decisions have a long record of being BAD DECISIONS, it might be better for us, if they stuck to the easy ones.

Or, perhaps, if we choose our MPs by different criteria, THEN they would take the RIGHT DECISIONS ROUTINELY, 'going forward'.

A recent poll by the government

Listening to radio 4 this morning I can understand why. Leaflets doing the rounds in Peckham telling people not to inform police of problems. And followed by a presenter from some Asian network about a phone in, asian men stating that white women and girls were "easy meat" was the commonly held view, I suppose this is our cultural enrichment the labour party spoke of.

  • Comment number 23.

22 ecolizzy......White women and girls ARE easy meat....but the problem is that OUR media and "culture" has made them that way.

Surely it`s obvious that many traditional cultures protect their girls better than we do?

If you seek to apportion blame then the state of our children`s moral health is more down to drivel like Eastenders and Slags in the City than it is to the presence of Asians here in Britain.

WHEN A COMPANY TRUMPETS 'UK CALL CENTRES' IS IT RACIST? (#22 link)

(I struggled with a Santander call centre yesterday.)

So; '4 in 5 Britons say immigration is too high'. What proportion want an INDIGENOUS, ENGLISH-SPEAKING: GP, dentist, social-worker, adviser, assistant, etc, etc? Westminster governance did this to us. WHY? No, REALLY why? - not a Jack Straw answer. One for NewsyNighty? Hardly.

Multiculture is great for restaurants and novelty nonsense, but in every-day life - stressed, time-constrained and nuanced - WE BELONG AMONG OUR OWN.

It really is time we traced the idiotic thinking that got us to this 'pretty pass' and made efforts to pull back from cultural collapse.

MORE DOWN TO 'THIS' THAN 'THAT' (#23)

I don't see alcohol in your computation Jim. As the 'weft' in out warped culture, yet still 'resisted' by Muslim culture, I strongly assert it plays a CRUCIAL role. Are you a user Jim? I think we should all 'declare' for this debate. (:o) Smug grin.

Wasn't drink 'of the Devil' a century or so ago? Might girls who drink be seen as lost to the Dark Lord? Remember what our Church used to do to those in the Devil's power? Why should 'good' Muslims not feel free to treat 'the lost' badly, with a religious mind-set?

Could it be that RELIGION ITSELF is a destructive thing, when practiced by juvenile minds - aka mankind?

25 Barrie ...struggle as I have with your words I am yet to discern a clear and coherent point(?)

But as this is apparently turning into a confessional (it`s the Barrie Springer Show from downtown Stoke Newington!)I foresook booze in 1989 because my work was quite depressing enough without any negative emotions getting enhanced or amplified by liqour! I have seldom regretted it ...and will never touch the stuff again.

WHEREAS my sons and their friends would have given Hogarth a year`s work in an average evening...and I doubt they will reach my age of 64. But you forgot the psychopathy-creating effect of other drugs too.

Don`t worry .... I notice the odd empty booze bottle on the specially created bombsites owned by asian people around here....so all is not lost...they are integrating down to our level quite fast....Gotham will be saved Batman Barrie!Satan rules OK!

    1. What legal authorisation does the media need to go undercover?

any group trying to take out power stations etc is a threat and should be infiltrated. especially since they are working from the basis of false beliefs because they were brainwashed when they were kids.

    2. Peter Lilley 'We need every penny to reduce the deficit'. So why pay 4 billion a year to mainly millionaire landowners merely for owning land? Why is it ring fenced? Why no land tax?

I hope this post meets witht the approval of the modster.

The climate protest undercover Copper report :
I'm just surprised some still believe in the man made global warming myth -which though, that part is man made, with the help of Al Gorleone and his global warming/climate change buddies... the witchfinder general had a more convincing argument mind you..and he had some clout for quite some time too eh.
    Anyroads...
Can someone answer me this question:
Why is it that anybody who enters the journo world of work (I'm told its work) why are they generally lefty wefty? is it nature or nurture. What is it about the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú especially that twists the minds of these people?
I only ask this question because anytime I watch the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú news, I have these old memories resurfacing, me as a child watching that 1960s film Village of the damned... I get a cold feeling inside, but then the mature me takes over, I recognise the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú standard issue bias, I change the channel, then just nip into the kitchen and make a cup of tea..I'm alright after that, especially so if i have some ginger nuts to dip in me brew.
I'm 46 and rarely drink alcohol- although i was a bit of a lush in my 20s.

DROITE DE SEIGNEUR IN 2011 (#29)

Queasy stomachs on the Today programme as the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú looks into multicultural Britain

Are young men of Pakistani origin really fizzing with testosterone, and do they target young white women for sex because they see them as easy meat, as Jack Straw claimed last week? The Today programme went to Bradford this morning to find out, and you got the distinct impression that no one was more shocked than the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú to find young Asian men, by and large, confirming what Mr Straw said.

    --------------------------

Did anyone else notice Dimbleby repeatedly push the issue of what Straw said on QT last night in spite of the reactions from the very PC audience.

Now why do you think he may have done that?

  • Comment number 36.

YOU MEAN THERE ARE CULTURAL DIFFERENCES ACROSS THE GLOBE! (#35)

That CAN'T be right. That would mean that invading another country would do more harm than good. Wise Tony would never have done that.

Britain has brought nothing but good to the world, for centuries, and we continue to civilise and uplift brutal Johnnie Foreigner, so that he can mimic the decadent, corrupt hell we live in, and know the joys of free speech (like this) to which NO ONE LISTENS.

No doubt paedophilia prepares young men for broad tolerance of sexual deviancy; now that HAS to be good. Put it on the National Curriculum. (I shall probably be arrested for teaching my sons that 'tab A in slot B' was INTENDED and all else out of kilter.)

Er, no. That's how the character Spock, played by the actor Leonard Nimoy, competently read out the words of some bloke slaving over a typewriter.

The chances of political speeches being from the same writer as orator are simply from another galaxy, far, far, away.
