Children working in coal mines in Victorian times
We meet an 11-year-old Victorian child seeking danger by working in a coal mine. He is offered jobs as a half-man, drawer or a bearer. The mine owners describe the details of each job and the dangers involved. He dismisses each as not being dangerous enough before offering to test for explosive gas using a lit candle.
