How to design and make a portable bird hide for children to use at a nature reserve
Mechanical engineer, Abbie Hutty, helps a team of children to research, design and make a portable bird hide for children to use at a local nature reserve. Abbie takes the children to meet a Ranger at the nature reserve, who shows them the main features of a bird hide. As further research, they look at a range of temporary structures and discuss the pros and cons of the different shapes and the materials used for their design. They construct models of a cube design and a square based pyramid design so they can decide through modelling which they鈥檙e going to use for their prototype. Another group tests the properties of different fabrics to see if they would work well for the bird hide. Having completed their research the team work together with Abbie to build their prototype. They then invite the Ranger, together with some young birdwatchers, to give their feedback.
