Chemical engineer, Yasmin Ali, helps a team of children to research, design and make a bag for a member of the local swimming team. Yasmin and the children meet members of the swimming team to find out what the key design requirements for a swimming bag are. The children discuss the specifications and split into two groups to sketch their ideas. One group designs a drawstring bag and the other opts for a backpack. Once they have decided which design best meets the swimmers’ requirements, they use design software to create their pattern pieces. They sort through a variety of fabrics to select something with the correct properties. They show their finished prototype to the swim team member to see if they’ve kept to their original design criteria.
