Strings Finalist - Jadran Duncumb
Sheffield-born student Jadran Duncumb has reached the final five in the prestigious Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Young Musician of the Year.
Jadran has won the Norwegian National Youth Competition twice, not only in the guitar class but also in the duet class with his brother Emil, who competed in the keyboard semi-final of Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Young Musician. Both boys currently live their family in Ski in Norway.
Jadran said he was "very surprised" to reach the final. "I was reasonably satisfied with how I played, but I never really expected to get to the Grand Final when I entered the competition. I just wanted to see how far I could get - although obviously I hoped and still hope that I can go all the way."
Jadran starts studying at the Royal College of Music this autumn. "In the long term I hope to be lucky enough to live off playing the guitar - hopefully a mixture of concerts and teaching." He is also keen more young people get into classical music. "It's really important that people discard their misperceptions that classical music is somehow too "intellectual" for them and that classical music loses its snobbish reputation."
One of the five musicians who compete in the final at Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff on May 10, 11 will follow in the footsteps of past winners including Nicola Benedetti, Jennifer Pike, Emma Johnson and 2006 winner clarinetist Mark Simpson.
