In this clip, school boy Alvin explains how he feared he would be rejected at school due to scarring on his body. But despite children asking questions about his scars, Alvin was able to make friends with a boy in his class called Luke. The clip shows the boys playing together in the playground and in the classroom.

Students could be asked to recap the things Alvin did to make friends with Luke. Ask students to describe how they make friends when they start a new club, group, or even when they started school. They could use these experiences to write a set of top tips for making friends. These tips could be displayed in posters designed by the students and displayed around the school.

Students could also discuss Alvin’s fear that people wouldn’t want to be friends with him because of the scars on his neck. Would it be fair for his classmates to do this? Challenge students to explore how we all look different, but have the same needs and the same feelings. Students could make paper plate portraits of themselves to show the range of differences we can see in the class.
