Bill Gibby
Bill Gibby is the new face in the village; a socialist who risks unseating Edmund. He appears to have the Village’s needs at his heart, and inspires Grace to find her roar. In spite of his popularity, his ulterior motive risks the future of the village and those who supported him - forever.
Derek Riddell on Bill
"Bill is an ex-miner who is standing as the Labour candidate in the forthcoming general election. An aficionado of the poet Percy Shelley, he is intelligent, passionate and well read. He is a war veteran, having spent four years digging tunnels at the front in the Great War. It is his experience of this conflict that informs a great deal of his politics.
He is the complete opposite to John MiddletonDerek Riddell
"What Bill says, he means, and you get to see through the course of the series his anger and sadness about things in society which he perceives to be unjust. It also shows his determination to try and change these things. He is passionate about waking the working classes from their passive acceptance of the status quo - the complete opposite to John Middleton. He believes that you can change things if you’re willing to fight for it and get enough people on your side. Ideas which, I think, Grace has always held but for various reasons has never been allowed to express… until now."
