The Birds of The Air !!!

Let's start with Wind Turbines. One of the faults mentioned against Wind Turbines is that they kill birds. I believe that this could be quite well true and that it is a hinderence to the development of Wind farms while people remain concerned about the wellbeing of the natural world. We still hope that as far as turbines are concerned that by some clever methods bird mortality can be lessened, for example, it is wise to keep away from the known migration paths. So much for our hopes as regards renewable energy!!!

But when the public points an accusing finger at our hopes to develop our energy towards a better future, may I relate that a more sinister possibility exists as regards our much loved feathered friends.

I don't know if many realize how millions of small birds have been slaughtereed since 2004 in a hail of lead, nets, and limed twigs by Southeren European hunters illegaly killing even the most endangered species. The biggest culprits are islands in the Mediterranean in the path of migrating flocks. I believe the future is not sure as regards improvments but we hope EU laws will prevail and that this horrible butchery will stop.

It would be very commendable too, if we were to find a more definate answer to bird deaths as regards Wind Farms which are still moderate compared with those perpetrated by people bent on mass killing.

Wind farms possibly kill birds...is that any reason to stop developing them? I think not, How many birds are killed by cars every year? It must be thousands do we throw our arms in the air and ban cars...no. What is the point of concerned about the wellbeing of the natural world when thanks to global warming and ozone depletion we will all be dead from skin cancer, never mind the birds will be all right. 17:38. 9/8/06

I guess there is good points and bad points to wind turbines, good side is cheaper green energy, bad side they look horrible sight on the landscape and from what i have heard not knowing if true is if the wind gets to a certain speed they are switched off ,so is this a reliable source of energy.

I'm unsympathetic to the islanders of Lewis who seem to be up in arms about proposed wind farms. Anyone who has been to Lewis will know that the proposed site is a dull dreich bit of landscape that can only be made more attractive by a wind farm. I did wonder if Lewis has ever considered putting a wave generator up at the Butt. That would seem like a sensible idea to me. Either way, we are all going to be affected by renewable energy and unreasonable opposition doesn't help. I'm sure the bird population is a concern but we spend too much time messing about with the natural order of things. A friend (now deceased) who farmed on Coll used to - according to his surviving wife - take care of the corncrakes when he was farming. This was long before the Corncrake initiatives we have now. And as she says, they're a b****y nuisance... they keep you awake at night. In singling out the corncrake for protection I wonder what other species or plant is going to become extinct.
